Taping Sticks

Recommended Posts

I use black cloth tape, from an inch past the heel going all the way covering the whole toe. I have a runner going from where the tape begins, running down the bottom of the blade, over the toe and an inch coming back on the top of the blade. I wax the bottom and puck down the rest of the blade, front and back. Thats about it.

Tape peeling off, shredding, used to be white but is now a mix of black, yellow and grayed white.

Bahaha. That's exactly what I had in mind when I mentioned fucked-up tape jobs. You go to remove the knob in order to put a plug in, only to find out that below the layers of black tape is a layer of green tape, which covers electrical tape, which covers white tape.

Oh people. ;)

I played with a kid back in high school that wouldn't remove old tape from his blade before putting new tape on, by half way through the season his blade was about 3/4 of an inch thick from all the tape  it didn't affect his play, he was a garbage goal type guy always in front of the net and scored a ton of goals... that didn't stop us from making fun of his stick though

For my knob, I go with splitting the tape in half length-wise and wrapping it around the butt end a few times- not very big, but big enough to barely feel it. Then I take regular-width tape and cover the shaft with one layer about 6" or so (roughly the width of a hockey glove).

As for the blade- ALWAYS black tape, ALWAYS heel-to-toe, ALWAYS wax. Sex wax is definitely the product of choice right now.

I can't imagine pulling the horizontal tape job. I feel like it would come off the blade waaaay too easily.

I tried taping the toe the other day by putting a few strips over the toe and pressing them together then cutting around it with scissors, it just split apart after like 2 seconds.. Any tips to keep that from happening?

I just continue the normal tape job til I'm clear off the toe, then like you did, I'll proess the tape together real well and sort of bend it over the contours of the toe so it sticks to as much of the actual blade as possible. Then I'll trim off the excess pretty carefully, I like to leave a 1/2mm or so on the blade (just a tiny bit so the scissors blades arent' hitting the actual stick) , then I'll press that excess down to the blade real good and press it w/ a puck to make sure it's down good and tight. After that i follow it up w/ some Zogs Sex Wax and make sure to get some around the toe. I never seem to have any issues w/ it peeling off or anything so give that a shot.

ye what that guy said ^

i just tape it like the toe is the same shape as the mid or heel...the just make sure the top/bottom/toe part has some tape over it before cutting it, i don't use the sex wax though

know your not asking me but...when i'm at the toe i just continue taping it like it was the heel, so you'll have a bit of tape stuck together not on the blade...and before u cut it, u make sure its on tight and the top/bottom of the blade has part of that tape stuck to it

That's a nice tape job dude.

Does anyone place a piece around the toe itself, as in a how some people (like myself) would first put a layer of tape long ways on a blade, then tape over it. Does anyone take a piece of tape and put it long ways over the toe blade and then start taping over it? I've never tried, but when I get a new ops I am interested in trying.

I could never do that due to my OCD about tape... I'd be able to see the "lump" of the extra tape underneath and the crease on the corners of the toe where it wasn't perfectly smooth... I have issues.

I've just found that it seems to help get a little life outta the tapejob. Before, I was having to retape between periods but the extra reinforcement from the increased surface area seems to help. Plus it helps generate some extra spin on the puck.

ok I'm bored today since it's been snowing here and I just taped my sticks up b/c I'm supposed to have a game tonight(which probably won't happen for me depending on how the roads look)... this is how I do my blade with the covered toe, this is a Heatley blade so it has a rounded top squared bottom and is pretty neat, I was using Forsberg blades for the past few years so this is a little different.

yea i just keep taping as if i were taping the blade and pinch it together, then bend it over the edges and cut to make smooth, and a heavy application of wax to end it.

I've been having issues with my Tacki Mac grips sliding around on the stick (maybe they're worn out), so I'm going to try tape again.

Killed about a roll and a half before I found something I liked:

Mikko Koivu style, kind of a tapered cone. Very comfortable. Maybe it's because the intermediate sticks are so small.
