3rd jersey on the road?

Recommended Posts

Is it me or have the 3rd jerseys been used for road games lately for the home team to wear the away jerseys. For example Blues at Kings Blues wear their 3rd jersey while Kings wear their white jersey.

Kings management wanted the home fans to see the new white road jerseys once at Staples, otherwise all they ever wear at home is the new black, 3rd black, and purple/gold retro.

I like the idea of alternating the white and darks at home. After all, when Calgary comes in, or whomever, wouldn't you rather see them in red than in white? I would. The whole "us versus the white team" kinda stinks.

Reason why is because of travel...some teams have different gloves and pants; packing an extra set on a 10 game roadtrip for one game on the road doesn't make sense. The majority of thirds are darks.

Related question- When did white become away jerseys? Having not been to NHL games in a while, it suddenly hit me the other night that they reversed this. Back in the 80-90's when I was attending games regularly dark was road jersey, white was for home.

When third jerseys became popular. The majority of NHL thirds were dark, therefore forcing teams to carry more stuff on the road when white was at home.

My recollection is that the white jerseys were historically the road jerseys. They certainly were when I started watching in the 60s. At some point, with league expansion, the league decided to have the teams wear their home jerseys on the road for a while, to let away crowds see every team's home jersey. That seemed to last for quite a while, but was eventually changed back.

That year, 22 of 30 teams have third jerseys. Out of those 22 teams, 21 are dark. Toronto wore a white 3rd. So by having darks at home, the road team will always bring their whites on the road and the home team can wear its dark home and dark 3rd without problems.
