how long does a stick's flex typically last?

Recommended Posts

Just curious how long a stick flex typically lasts for an nhl player vs. a regular person.

Since i don't shoot that hard compared to an nhl player i could probably use a stick for a year without it losing its "pop" - but how long does a nhl'er normally get out of a stick before it loses its "pop"?

I'm sure the manufacturers have some idea - but i didn't know if someone on here would know.

well deryk engelland gave me one of his s19's and its pop was already gone so it could be after one practice but im not sure if he used it longer

If I recall correctly, I remember seeing a video where Spezza said he uses a new stick every period because he likes the stiff feeling of a new stick. I don't remember if that was when he was using wood or if it's the composites though.

Wood...

Although his composites go soft for me after about 30 games....

Is he still using 110-115 flex sticks?

Yes. I have two batches of his sticks. One that was 115 and one that is 110. The 110's weigh about 15g more. Both are SE16's repainted as something else...

He uses a very different style of foams in the blade. It almost feels hollow, but the puck feel is amazing. The blade looses a lot of rigidity though after a month of use by me... The shaft also seems to whip out a bit.

pretty sure i saw a video where patrick kane said he uses a new stick every game

If we're thinking of the same video, he said he usually tapes up one stick that is completely new for games and 2 or 3 that he's used before that he's comfortable with.

Totally dependent on flex, brand, your weight, how you shoot, etc...

Those who aren't paying for sticks will tell you one session, those who are will tell you when it breaks.

well, then what about nhl players - is it pretty much normal that every nhl player goes through multiple sticks a game?

i guess i'm wondering that if their sticks didn't break in two (which they do a lot) - how long would they last? a game or two before they lose their "pop"?

The bigger issue at the pro level is slashing. They aren't swapping sticks every period because they lost their pop, it's due to the shot blocking and hacking.

I second what Harv mentioned. I would think it has most to do with how hard a certain player is on a a stick, especially at the "rec" level. Again too, model plays into this as well. I would also suggest personal preference? Maybe a stick that feels whipped out to me, may not to another person (and of course vice versa).

I was going to mention this, not to mention how centremen abuse those sticks at the faceoff.

I have a 3 year old ST that still shoots the same and my Total One has seen maybe 300-325 shots on the shooting pad with equal consistency.

In my experience, I end up having to replace the blade while the shaft still feels and shoots strong.

Remember, they have disposable income in the NHL and by no means do they care about taking care of their sticks. I would have filed for bankruptcy if I was replacing 200-225 sticks like Danny Briere says he used a single season.

i could probably get a couple hundred shots out of my sticks as well - if a nhl player was using a stick in warm-ups shooting slapshots and not getting slashed i wonder if they would average getting 20-30 slapshots per stick?
