Which helmet? Easton S19, Bauer 7500, Reebok 7K

Recommended Posts

Which would you recommend?

I'm leaning toward the S19 because it is $20 cheaper than both the Bauer/Reebok. How do they compare with each other?

Is it worth the extra $20 to spring for one of the other two?

Have you tried any of them on? If so, which one fits better? You shouldn't buy a helmet based on price. You should buy it based on fit.

Whichever fits, $20 saved for a poor fitting helmet won't even cover the co-pay for the doctor should the poor fitting helmet fail to protect you properly

It depends. Do you want a helmet just because you have to wear one, or do you want protection? If you care about your head, get the one that fits the best.

I was helmet shopping about a month ago, I was told the S17 was compared to the Bauer 7500. Don't know how true this is. I tried on the Bauer 7500, 9900, S19, and S17. I purchased the S17 because it fit great and was fully adjustable. The price was nice too.

I was wondering this as well I was looking into getting either the E700 or the 7500 but in not sure which is more protective. I recently just suffered a concussion and now that I look at four year old 5500 I think it is time to invest in a new bucket. Which one is more noted for there protection? I have heard good things about the 7500 and E700 also, but if the 7500 is the same protection-wise, I'll go with that since it's basically the same as the 5500 I have now and save some money. Thanks any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.

As wrangler noted, the one that fits you best is the one that will protect you best. Saving a couple bucks shouldn't really be a factor when you're talking about your brain, especially if the helmet you have now played any part in the concussion.

I ran into a parent that their son plays hockey and I asked how he was doing. She replied, "He got a concussion the other night" I replied, "I am so sorry to hear". She replies, "Its my fault, I picked him up a helmet that was on sale during my lunch break. the doctor told us that it did not fit right." Kids at our rink are getting concussions like colds (It seems). Don't mess around with this purchase, make sure it fits. Her son is 10 years old and will be off the ice for at least a year.

Kids are getting concussions like colds because they get caught up in buying the "trendy" helmets, or the ones that look the most stylish. Fit is often last concern. I go BS when I see a team all wearing the same brand helmet, prob forced by the organization or coach to do so.

I noticed that with the USA junior team. Both the S17 an E700 have that adjustable band inside the helmet that seems to do a good job fitting various people. My LHS couldn't keep the S17 in stock a few months ago because of that feature.

The fact that they are kids doesn't help either. Are they ever really honest when they want something that looks cool? "Yes, Dad, it fits great." I know you can push and pull on it a little, but sometimes the average parent would not know what they are looking for in fit and go with the easy out of listening to the kid in the store as they pick the helmet out.

I completely agree with your statement. As a first year coach, parents are constantly asking me about equipment for their son or daughter. This tells me that they need help purchasing equipment and don't really know what to do, or how it should fit. My daughter half the time dosent care about how the equipment fits, just wants to get out of the store and play hockey. The parents need to make sure the equipmet fits correctly even if it takes a little more time. When I took my daughter helmet shopping she was complaining like crazy, but we were there atleat an hour, and didn't leave until we found a helmet that fit great. I see it all the time at the pro shops too. A parent runs in before the kids gane or practice and say's, "I need a (size)l (piece of equipment) asap!....and runs out.

We went with the Bauer 7500. It has been a great helmet so far.

I would go with what fits the head best with what is in the price range. I feel a poor fitting helmet can make you pay for it more in the long run!!
