ovechkin's stick length

Recommended Posts

Ok so I know im opening myself up to a ton of abuse here such as use the search engine or why does it matter but its driving me nuts its just one of those things i would love to know :) ive used the MSH search engine, google, and even emailed a few people but no one seems to know or want to tell me. However im convinced that with the amount of his pro stocks/game used sticks out there someone knows the answer so im turning to you guys as this is where ive been able to find out everything to do with hockey before. So please does anybody know the answer or have a stick they could measure for me?

Thanks Guys

I have to disagree. I do not have photo evidence, but at the games I have been to it appears his sticks only come up to collar bone if that. Plus when he is skating you can see when his hands are shoulder width apart his low hand is almost at the blade which screams short stick. Plus the super aggressive rocker plays into a shorter stick imo. It allows you to one hand it away from the body on the heel and then on the drag and shoot snapper the aggressive toe rocker turns it into a very upright stick.

Same with Crosby really short stick.

So yeah, roughly up to his collar bone/shoulders on skates. You'll find that most high level forwards (not just NHLers, also the junior A, college, etc. players I've played with) will use sticks around shoulder height on skates, the high level forwards using sticks cut to around nose height on skates are the exception, not the rule. For some reason lower level players seem to use shorter sticks though, among guys who haven't played competitive hockey it's very common to see sticks cut to around nose height on skates.

This is an old topic, but it came to mind when I was experimenting with my stick length - it was always pretty short, to the collar bone lever if not shorter, so I added a 3" extension and so far loved the change - handling isn't as easy but everything else - shot, pick protection etc has improved quite a bit.

So I did a bit of an informal research and it seems that younger high level forwards (Stamkos, Hall, Seguin, N-Hopkins etc) actually use pretty long sticks - at least to their nose (when on skates) if not not higher. Datsyuk is another (not so young) example.

Is this a new trend as the game getting more and more physical - guys are bigger and stronger than ever and so there's less and less nifty dipsy-doodle stick handling happening and more body puck protection?

Just curious...

That's funny... I have had one or two of Duchene's pro stocks and they were a normal 85 flex. Wonder if he means they are 115 flex after he cuts them to his height.

Duchene uses a really short stick and in a radio interview says it is 115 flex.
