Why are the visitor teams back wearing dark jerseys?

Recommended Posts

Not all teams are doing it, as the Hawks are in their regular road whites as I speak. No clue as to a reason, but I can speculate that if the teams agree on it, they can wear whatever jerseys they want to.

Home teams should rock their colors at home in my opinion. It's about you when you are in your building, you should be the one with more vibrant or noticeable jersey.

I think the NHL should go back to this setup. I've always preferred white at home, dark on the road.

But what happens is that when a team wants to wear their third jersey (which is almost always dark) it means that the road team has to pack their whites. And if they are on a 5-game road trip, that means they will be lugging an additional set of jerseys, socks and helmets that will only be used for one of their 5 games.

Teams announce when they wear their thirds, however, under the current setup, they essentially could choose to wear them as a game-time decision as they always know the road team will wear white.

The Blackhawks aren't using a third jersey this year. And the white jerseys are on the road, where they started, and where they belong. The home fans are entitled to see the home jerseys, rather than the plain road jerseys, for their money.

This. I'm still a bit thrown when I turn on a game and try to figure out where they are playing.

The rule is home team wears dark and road team wears white. This was put in place because of third/alternate jerseys almost all being dark colors (I believe Dallas was the only one that used a white third)..however, if teams specify what jersey they wear in advance the visiting team can plan accordingly. I think they try to only switch things up for a one game road trip so they don't have to carry two sets of gear.

That may be one of the reasons they went back to it, but keep in mind that dark at home was the rule in the NHL, except for 33 seasons, and the regular use of alternate jerseys is a relatively recent addition.

I think they should just use dark at home for half the season, then switch back to the light jerseys.

I could almost swear I remember my hometown's Central Hockey League team doing this for a while, although I can't find any confirmation online.

Completely disagree. One of the cool things about being a season ticket holder was seeing the other teams colors come into your home arena. Seeing a white visiting team play every night is incredibly boring.

My view is colored by the fact that I like the Blackhawks home jerseys so much. I don't really care about the other teams' jerseys.

JR correct me if Im wrong, but dont teams always bring 2 sets too? incase of blood or something happening to the first in the middle of the game? So that would be 4 sets, which is alot of extra gear?

If it were a long road trip would be a lot of trouble to have the spare set shipped home for the portion the dont need them?

While there are "blood jerseys" for that purpose, no, they travel with one set.

For instance, when I was with TB, they had two sets of regular season jerseys; the first set were worn for the first half of the season, then switched to the second set for the second half. If the team makes the playoff, they have a playoff set.

I know Detroit wears their whites at home for a few games a year.

I prefer dark jerseys at home, because then fans can wear their jerseys, or just wear all their color, and stand out. I hated it when everyone is wearing red to the Wings games, and Calgary or Chicago would come to town. Problem is a lot of people still have Yzerman "home" jerseys from when they were white, but it seems to be getting better now.

Back in the day, the Dallas Cowboys decided to wear white at home so that fans in attendance every week would not see only blue vs. white, but instead see white vs. blue, white vs. black, white vs. green, etc. The NHL followed suit, and I think they need to go back to that. I know the dark 3rd jerseys complicate things but that seems like the tail wagging the dog.

Either way Im ok with it, I do like the dark jerseys better so I wouldnt mind seeing them switch back. Along the lines of what you were saying, is when the Pens do the "white out" in the playoffs where they encourage fans to wear white...drives me crazy because the other team is in white!!! If they switched back i dont think itd bug me as much

JR what happens then on the road if some gets busted open good and blood covers their jersey but the cut it fixable in the locker room? can they wear the bloodied jersey? (not that i doubt you just very curious)

While true, it had more to do with that though; Tex Schramm wanted the Cowboys to have an iconic look; home and away, they will always look the same. His inspiration came from Georgia Tech, who to this day still only wears white.

If he's busted up good then they're going to take time to work on him, and they'll have time to work on/wash his jersey as well.

Although, wasn't there a player in a blood jersey recently? Like last week? Wore #62 or something?

Yep - Cory Sarich; last week.
