chippa13 1844 Report post Posted March 6, 2012 From what I recall of NHL rules, should both goalies go down with injuries then the team is allowed to dress any position player on that evening's roster.
Davetronz 109 Report post Posted March 6, 2012 From what I recall of NHL rules, should both goalies go down with injuries then the team is allowed to dress any position player on that evening's roster.I recall a story about 6 months back where an NHL club couldn't get a backup from their affiliate before puck drop, so they ended up signing a beer league goalie that was buddies with one of the coaches to a 1 game contract (worth about $7000). The guy dressed, took shots in warm up, and then was replaced on the bench in the first period by the goaltender who flew in from the affiliate. I guess he'd informally practiced with the team a couple times before too. Pretty cool opportunity.

There is no way a team would pay $7000.These backups are signed to ATOs. Which means they are on an amateur tryout so if they are kept, they are rewarded with a contract. But if they are cut, they get nothing. This happens alot of times over the summer with NHL rookie camps. They call their college draft pick players in on ATOs so when they are released they still retain their amateur status. You'll see ATOs in the AHL and ECHL alot too. No money is exchanged unless you get a real contract.
crazyhick 19 Report post Posted March 6, 2012 I remember this actually happening during an nhl game years and years ago. I believe it was pens vs. bruins and they had had to have a player suit up because both goalies were injured during the game.

cooperalls 4 Report post Posted March 7, 2012 I've spoken to one beer-league goalie that's been a sub for his local ECHL team twice. I don't believe he got much (if any) monetary compensation...but the team let him keep his "game" jersey, gave him some tickets etc. He said the best part is getting to be on the bench and in the locker room. Being that close to a pro game is an awesome experience for somone who's never played for free.
