Stick question

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, couple quick questions about the sticks I'm using.

Currently I switch between an Int 67 flex One95 with a PM9 pattern, and an Int 65 flex S19 hall pattern. I find it much easier to stick handle and hold onto the puck with the One95, I think this is because of the lower lie. However I find it easier to shoot with the S19. Can you guys recommend anything between the two patterns? Looking for something with a 5 lie and a slightly more lofted blade.

Second question, I'm 5'8'', was around 145-150 lbs when I got the sticks originally, Im now up around 160-162 lbs, I got the Int sticks thinking I wouldn't be able to flex the senior sticks after cutting them down, however I'm noticing the sticks I currently have are moving around in my hands a decent amount (I'm an adult, probably shouldn't be using the int sticks). Could the smaller shaft geometry be causing issues with my shot? I'm noticing a lot of times Im flubbing my shots because I cant properly turn the stick over during the shot.

Sorry if these sound like dumb questions, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

try sherwood t90, they have 4" free flex zone that can be cut without effecting its flex. if you want lie 5 (listed 5.5 but its closer to 5) with more loft, i think pp09/ spezza curve will be good. not sure about the shaft width.

Don't hesitate to ask questions. That's what we're here for!

Do you feel like you need to move up in flex or is the 67/65 working for you? I'm an adult and use the Intermediate sticks. Flex is a personal preference and not only determined by weight.

You could try candy-cane taping your current stick to add some grip and see if this helps with the turning over problem.

For a blade pattern, I find that no matter what pattern I use my stick-handling is not effected. However, feeling confident in your equipment is what matters.

I would suggest the Warrior Kopitar pattern. It is a little less open then the Easton Hall. Warrior also has a feature on some of the newer sticks that when cutting the stick, it will not affect the flex. If you're looking for a low-kick stick (like the S19) check out the DT1, Widow, Diablo, or Dynasty. If you want mid-kick stick (like the One95), check out the Evo.

For Easton sticks, a Heatley curve is what you are looking for. Midway between a PM9 and a Hall, slightly more open than a PM9, mid curve like a Hall, 5 lie. There isn't much else out there in retail patterns that fits what you are looking for - the lie is the issue - I have settled on a PM9, I just wish Easton would make an Iginla with a lie 5.

As suggested above, the T90 spezza curve is also worth a look if you want to try a senior stick with a lower flex rating that you can cut and still keep the same flex.

i thought iginla is the same curve as heatley, but different lie? is heatley shorter than pm9 just like iginla?

Iginla is 5.5 lie, Heatley is 5. Heatley is longer than iginla, close to PM9 length. Heatley has a slightly squarer toe, not square but not round like an iginla.

I have found that Heatley is not a common curve whereas there are plenty of Iginla, as I want a 5 lie hence my comment about an Iginla with lie 5 as that would be my preferred blade. I'd take a Heatley any day but as I said, I have found them hard to find.

Iginla, Heatley, and P88 are all more closed and/or neutral patterns, correct?

and how would that work exactly

The sticks are made 3 inches longer than normal and that 3 inches isn't measured when determining the flex. There's been some discussion on it in other threads that explain it much more in depth.

The sticks are only about an inch longer than a normal senior retail length.

For these sticks (I don't know about other Sherwood sticks as I've only had T90's and N12's) Sherwood measure the flex 3 inches from the butt end (there are a number of youtube vids showing how manufacturers measure flex). Sherwood call the last 3 inches on the stick a "flex free zone" but if you don't cut the stick and play with the full length then imho it plays a little softer than stated.

you are correct - it is impossible to cut a shaft down (or extend) and not alter the flex. even if the mfr stiffens the end section of the shaft to where it doesn't flex significanlty, you still have less (or more) 'mechanical advantage' on the shaft by changing the length.

Ended up picking up a Senior 65S II in a Cammalleri pattern, 85 Flex. I know its about the same as the PM9, but what can I do, I needed the 5 lie.

My outdoor beer league starts this Friday, can't wait to use it. Has anyone here used the new 65S yet? I've seen pretty positive reviews on the original, but I'm wondering if there are any differences between the two.

Thanks

I agree 1000% with vet88 regarding the Igina/Heatley curves. I have experimented with alot of different curves and lies. By far the best shooting combo for me is an S19 with a Lie 5 heatley. I have an S19 Iginla and I cannot handle the puck nearly as well with the 5.5 lie.

Can the experts on here suggest other manufacturers sticks that have lie/curve that play similar to the lie 5 heatley on an S19?

True, however the stiffness of the part you're cutting out and the kickpoint spot will affect the flex change (the lower the kickpoint and the stiffer the part you're cutting, the lower the change in flex rating)
