Need help picking out the most protective hockey pants.

Recommended Posts

I have the same pants too and i can kind of understand what you are saying. My beef with the pants are mainly the sizing. im 5'10 and 185lbs and i got a size Medium and have to tighten the laces and belt system to the tightest. Im getting suspenders to make them feel more secure on me. I should've gotten the Vapor cause i heard those are a more fitted pant but you live and learn! those will be my next pant

Looking at the illustration here, it looks like the Supreme pants are tighter around the waist than the Vapors.

I have older Reebok 8k and they are built like a tank, great two piece pants. However, the Tackla girdle I have has better tailbone protection. I would say as ood as anything you can buy. The trade off is that it is not as protective for shot blocking, etc... Things most people use pants for! LOL!

The ccm CL definitely has good butt protection, and my impression is the CS line is more protective but a bit heavier than CL

actually, i'm currently in a pair of cs and i'd say the butt padding in the cs is noticeably less than the cl when i was trying them on in the shop.

Eagle and Tackla. Done!!

imo, i'd say the only area the tackla's were lacking in (US version 9000's) was butt protection when i was considering them. built like tanks though everywhere else. can't speak for eagles though.

I guess I have a well padded butt!!! Personally I thought they were fine back there. Eagles are also highly padded and I think for a while built by the same factory.

If you go Pro make sure you find out the size specs. A large is very very large, remember pros have huge thighs.

Most of you guys seem to be talking about tailbone protection, which it doesn't seem like the OP is talking about.

There is not a lot of cheek protection in any pants. Bauer is probably the worst, Tackla/Eagle, Warrior and CCM are probably the best...but if you really want cheek protection they sell padded undergarments. I cannot speak to how any of those work because I'm the kind of guy that takes padding out of my pants to make them less bulky.

When I started, I used to fall a lot (starting hockey at age 29). My Bauer One15 pants just werent gonna cut it for tailbone protection.

I ended up going with the EQ30 pants. They have a hard plastic insert in the tailbone protection that worked VERY well. I barely felt it when I'd fall.

Now I'm a bit stronger on my skates, and have sacrificed a bit of that protection for a lighter weight pant (I miss how lightweight and flexible my One15 pants were). I'm currently in the One60 pants.

But yea, I'll throw in a recommendation for Easton's EQ series pants.

The Vapors are the more fitted, tighter pant. They are based on the core girdle.

The Supreme has more room in it.

Look at the illustration; it shows where the pants are tighter and looser in relation to each other. Do you have specific experience on the waist, which shows the Supreme to be tighter?

Thanks to everyone for the input. I browsed a lot of pants today and I ended up buying the CCM U+ Fit09 pants. These things are excellent. Far more protection than my One80s.

Another pant that had a lot of protection was the Easton ST4. I actually found it surprising that the higher end the pants were the less protection they had in this area. This was for every brand. Even checked out the Crazy Strongs and they had a little less padding here.

So now I'm wondering. I was looking at some IW Reviews on Youtube and they said that the U+ Pros are basically these pants with more beefed up padding. Does anyone know how much more padding there is? I wonder if it's worth hunting those pants down.

OptimusReim also mention the EQ30s. I compared them to the Fit09s and the CCMs had better protection.

I'm a happy camper, but if I could find even more I'd be super happy.

Glad you found something that will work for you. When I was looking for pants last year, I couldn't find the U+ Pro pants to check out, either, so I don't know.

Also, I was looking at Pro Hockey Life as someone suggested, I'm having a little difficulty understanding the naming.

I assume it goes

U+ Pro

U+ 12

U+ 08

U+ 04

Then I've seen

U+ Fit 05

U+ Fit 07

U+ Fit 09

CL

CS

How does it all rank? What the difference between the Fit (odd numbers) and the even numbered ones? Is one an older model?

For the most part, you have it right. The only corrections would be that the u+ pro goes at the top of the "fit" models from the previous generation and the CL and CS go above the u+ 12, with the CL being the top line pant in the current generation.

My findings were the same as yours on the 09 vs. the CS in regards to the butt padding. But for me, I just couldn't get over how light the CS were for how much padding they provide and I liked the extra room they provided in the thighs.

Between the pro's and the 09's I couldn't tell much of a difference in the butt padding but the pro's seemed to be a bit more protective/bulky everywhere else.

Thanks for the info. So the Fit series is older?

th6252 and TeamHonda's got it. To make that botched quote easier to understand, there was :

U+ Pro, Fit 09, Fit 07, Fit 05, Fit 03

followed by the current lineup of

U+ CL, U+ CS, U+ 12, 08, 04
