Need help picking out the most protective hockey pants.

Look at the illustration; it shows where the pants are tighter and looser in relation to each other. Do you have specific experience on the waist, which shows the Supreme to be tighter?

Yes, I have had both. Supreme is looser in almost all aspects.

In my case it was the other way around. I'm too "husky" for Vapors.

what vapors do you have and what size? I have a medium in the one80 and im 5'10 185 lbs, its just that my lower half of my body isnt big even though i work my legs out.

I had the Vapor X60s. Size XL. Sold them after one game! I weighed 240 at the time. Now 223 and dropping..... maybe try again at some point....

I took a bad unpadded fall on my ass/hip once, years ago at a public skate, and ever since, that hip (really, the greater trochanter of the femur) has been extremely sensitive to impact, so I went through a similar search for maximum "ass" protection. I ended up with the Vapor core girdle (far more protective than the Supreme and Tackla girdles, which I also tried), along with Farrell padded compression shorts. Combination works well for me - I spend plenty of time on my ass and rarely feel a thing. The Farrell shorts were designed for hockey, with sock velcros and whatnot, but I'm not sure if they're still made. Nevertheless, if you've already got a pant you like, then I strongly second the previously mentioned recommendation of adding a padded compression short - it helps.

I strongly disagree.

The vapor is much less protective in the hip/ass area compared to the supreme one95/to girdle. I have tried the apx/x60 and the one95/to. Currently using the one95. It offers imo much more overall protection than the vapor, hands down, it was very painful using the vapor girdles. I know a few people on here that would agree with me.

Dunno, maybe I have an odd shaped ass. I just found with both the Supreme and Tackla girdles that there was an area of thin padding (around 4-5mm of something pretty low density) in the spot I always seem to land on when I blow an edge during a turn. The Vapor core was the only one that gave me reliable coverage in the spot I needed.

Exactly my problem with the APX girdle. While the protection is excellent in the kidney/spine area, did they forget to work on the coccyx/taibone/ass area? the foams are very very thin and protection is virtually non existent.

But lets not derail this thread, if op is looking for protection he should be wearing pants. Me too i shouldnt be wearing a girdle because of a bad coccyx injury that left my taibone bruised for more than a year but i cant go back to pants once i tried girdles.

Heres my APX

i got EQ50 pants. Love the fit and they are supper protective. If you still need more ass padding, these make it easy. There is a pocket on the back of the pad, that you can just insert another piece of foam into. Easy!

I think maybe our difference in experience comes in what we're trying to protect - you're right that the Vapor (mine is pre-APX) is a bit thin in the tailbone and area immediately adjacent to it. But where I seem to need protection is just slightly further around to the side, where the Vapor is just tank-like. Anyway, I agree we shouldn't derail the thread, but is a pant necessarily better? Although while I admit my knowledge on pants is incomplete, the ones I tried (mid-range RBK, Tackla) were no more protective for me, since they always seemed to manage to shift during a fall in such a was as to expose my vulnerable spots.

Youre right most girdles are better built than low/mid range and pants, but high end the pants offer good protection, especially two piece pants, absolutely zero gaps in the hip/tailbone area, made with thick foams and plastics (at least the once i have owned)

I have cut open pants before and added tailbone padding. It depends on the pants though, in terms of how well you can get in there and sew it back up.

My eagle px88 pants just offer such little protection for my a%# and the area to the left and right of it. pants that cost me $150 and ive been in complete regret since day 7. I was in the canucks team store, they only sell jerseys and tshirts and stuff like that, no actual gear, but they had a couple of stalls with pro stock equipment for decoration, anyways, they had these easton pants and man did they look protective. Can someone put a name on these? thanks

So I was playing a game and as I was coming off the bench (I have no idea how) but I slipped badly, both of my feet went high up into the air and after about 2 seconds of air time I landed flat on the right side of my ass (backside of my femur). Not only did everyone laugh at me (don't really care), but my ass hurts so bad I can't sit right. I'm honestly super pissed off right now because it hurts so bad. I'm such an oaf.

The thing is I currently have Bauer Supreme One80 Senior Medium size pants. The only padding they have on the backside is a very thin sponge. Not sure what exactly it's supposed to protect. It really only covers the tailbone, barely, but the femur sits basically right in the crease so you get no protection whatsoever. I've had these pants for about a year now and I'm disappointed. I've fell on my ass in them before, but it's never hurt like this. I play really conservatively right now because I'm afraid of falling.

I've decided money doesn't matter and I want to find the pants with the most protection for the ass that I can find. I'd like to pick out something from Sportchek because I have a 20% off coupon from there.

Any ideas guys?

+ 1 on the Franchise/hustler. I wore mid range pants (one60s) because they were light until a similar fall you had. The hip padding and the rear padding almost overlap. I've had similar falls since from getting leveled and they honestly offer great protection.

If you need something extra, I'd suggest some BMX protection shorts to wear under your pants....

Lots of good retail suggestions already. I'd second the suggestion of a girdle/shell. Padding stays in position well with those.

A padded short to supplement your pants might work. Shockdoctor Shock Skin shorts, or the like. The padding is fairly thin though, so if you're talking a "Charlie Brown missing the football" type of fall, probably something thicker is warranted.

Figure skaters use hip/butt shaped pads that simply slide under skating pants/tights to stay in place. Our shop sells them for about $13ea. They're available in different sizes and thicknesses from 1/2" to 1". If I wanted to protect my backside, I'd probably look for a way to modify my undergarment, as the padding would likely stay in place better. Modifying your one80's is still a good way to go. You could sew a pocket for the same type of pad to slip into.
