Beflar

Does anyone else here hate getting there skates sharpened?

It looks like a lot of steel is gone from the toe

Yes, the first guy touched the toe. I don't know why he did but he f/cking did. He also did it to a friend of mine on his LS3. Lucky for him he has an LS3 but the Makos are naturally pitched aggressively forward (as you know) and touching the toe really trimmed it down further than what it is already.

The worst part is everyone i called today didn't have the replacement steel in stock. Going to check noicing, heard they might have some soon.

You can simply mail the steel in. You should check out their website for all the answers...

Skater questionnaire form requested...looking forward to getting a professional sharpen and ready to stop letting minimum wage yahoos sharpen my skates.

For comparison, here's a pic of raw Mako steel, not sharpened, brand new:

Here is same runner minutes later sharpened with a 8/10' combo radius:

Jimmy,

Can you re-do do them showing blade center? Sorry looks because of the different pictures as in distance from the Camera that the second is pitched on a negative pitch or sitting on the back half of the blade.

you don't think these look a lot fuller on the toe compared to mine? can you take a closer pic of the toe. Mine seem like so much blade came off.

I had a hard time getting a good angle with the lighting. Just trying to show that even on a stock runner, visually not a lot looks like it's touching the ice. As I said before, your toe doesn't look too bad but the only way to know how much was taken off it to overlay it on top of a new runner. I'm guessing, that not many sharpeners would intentionally do extra work like doing more passes on the toe, unless they are getting paid to do it. Most are lazy and don't do enough passes on the first sharpening.

I think with your steel being installed in the holder it may look different. here's a pic on a new unsharpened Mako. Looks a lot like yours.

The rink in my hometowen sucks at sharpening, it'salways some dumpy kid that doesn't care about his craft. Luckily they just opened a Scheels super store here I can take them there. They do a better job than the rink, and they don't even charge!

I had my skates sharpened at a local rink where they have a snack bar/"pro shop". The pretty lady behind the counter said "absolutely, I can sharpen skates and I'm damned good too". Someone had apparently messed with the set up on the machine, because when she handed them to me, they were flat (no hollow) and they were sharpened at a 30 degree angle instead of being level side to side. Yes, I said 30 DEGREES OFF..LOL. The steel was all completely burnt...Doohhh....

Needless to say, I wasnt able to use them and ended up having to replace the steel. A guy on my team that does alot of sharpening took the steel so he could show them off to some of the guys at the place where he sharpens..they were so messed up, that they were famous for a while, I sitll occasionally get comments on how awfully bad those blades were, LOL...

Is it normal for the steel to be fairly warm/hot after sharpening ? Had a sharpening done at reputable lhs and there were some faint burn marks at the end and the steel was warmish/hot.

It shouldn't get hot when your skates are being sharpened. They were probably putting too much pressure on the skate while sharpening. Since you are grinding metal the blade will heat up, but it should only start to become slightly warm, definitely not in the vicinity of hot.

I recently got my grafs sharpened (3rd time since new) and its screwed me up.

After the first 2 sharpenings, I always liked how the Grafs really suited my skating style and stopping was effortless, as though I was on a pin head and perfectly centered over the skates. Now, since this recent sharpen, it's as though I am pitched further back on the blade. Every stop comes with a grinding noise that I feel vibrating up through my legs. Looking at the blades now and comparing their height from the edge of the runner, there is definitely more out of the middle section of the blade than the front or back ie the blade looks flatter thru the middle section.

I want to go and have a discussion with the sharpener but don't know enough about the subject to ask intelligent questions.

Do sharpeners have different templates for different boots or is there just one template for each radius eg 9', 10' etc?

Anyone know what the standard profile is for a Graf skate (G3 ultra)?

How do you find the middle point of the blade?

If I can find someone decent who can reprofile them, what should I be asking for if I want a profile similar to the original Graf profile?

Thanks for any advice.

ps - mailing my blades in to a good shop isn't really suitable for me as I live outside us/canada.

Seriously, the other topic on what you're asking that was locked had a link to the discussion. Something tells me this is a bad attempt at guerilla marketing.
