Andy Sutton's life after hockey-Equipment Co.

Interested to see how different their product is, also interested to see if the names change.

Sounds like they are more likely to be licensing the tech to an established equipment manufacturer than producing their own line.

"Sutton Protective Co. - Keeping you protected enough that you'd be able to take that hits that I'd be given a suspension for."

In all seriousness, I'm very intrigued to see the outcome of this and see if he'd be able to pull off a cost-effective method to make the equipment he's stated to make.

Sounds interesting, but also like it will be cost prohibitive....

That would be my expectation as well. Small changes in production costs result in significant price changes at retail. Companies are looking at ways to be more profitable, not lowering their margins.

The name of the game for a long time in protecting against impact is dispersing energy and slowing things down so they're are no sudden stops on impact. And it seems he acknowledges this well.

It's funny to see that carbon fiber is brought up after it was brought up in another thread the other day.

-35-40% load displacement

-50% lighter

-In the days of retail $900 skates, $200 helmets, $180 shoulder pads, $200 gloves and $200ish pants, I'm pretty sure if he can deliver on his protection and weight promises there's a market there somewhere. Maybe not at Canadian Tire, but definitely at least in the pro stock circles. Especially since collision sports like football and hockey are under intense scrutiny these days.

he'll have quite a challenge on his hands. running a startup in this crowded market isn't easy. as nice sounding as the technology is in the article, I think one of the hardest challenges is getting the marketing and awareness going. word of mouth can only tale you so far for something like this.

That's why he is looking towards licensing the technology (which has many applications beyond simply hockey) to manufacturers rather than marketing yet another brand of equipment.

Yes, but the article still made me expect a completely different look from whatever application of their technology. Something like Nliten, while it covers both aspects they emphasize: research and weight, repels me. Gore-Tex is a counter example. I like the sound of it as well as what it does.

Smart way to go given the number of applications.
