Supplemental Discpline 2013-14

I don't like either of those shots. Both were forearms to the head with no attempt to mitigate contact. In the second hit, he even drives up and through. Could Kadri make history and get 2 suspensions out of one game?

I haven't seen much of Kadri before this game, but I really liked what I saw. He seemed to be emerging as a key player for the Leafs last year. He has way too much talent to feel that he needs to play this way to keep his roster spot. One local reporter said that Kadri skated off the ice laughing after the second hit. Maybe there is some history or something happened earlier in the game that I don't know about. Or maybe he just hates Finns...

One local reporter said that Kadri skated off the ice laughing after the second hit.

He was laughing from the moment he was told he was being kicked out of the game. Nothing to do with the guy being a Finn...

May well have been, I didn't watch the slo mo's but from the full speed replays I thought the second one looked worse.

Yeah, the second one looked REALLY bad until you really slow it down. Shoulder and arm down, into the body. Head contact was the smallest part of the hit. The NHL seems to acknowledge that sometimes the head being hit as a result of a hard body check, rather than a targeted head shot, is inevitable. I think this falls into that category.

Per Dreger:

Kadri gets match because there is no major penalty for illegal check to the head. Head doesn't appear to be point of contact. However, officials probably believed the hit was worth more than 2 mins. NHL will likely introduce major for headchecking in the future.

His hearing today is for the first hit on the goalie, and it looks like nothing for the second one (which I personally agree with, I think the 5 min major - or the match since a 5 min major for that doesn't exist yet - was sufficient since the head wasn't targeted).

Here's the replay:

I think his head hitting the glass made it seem much worse in real time.

It's one thing to hit a guy, it's something different to launch up into one that is in a vulnerable position.

Optimus, the Finn thing was a joke. Just a coincidence that both Backstrom and Granlund are both Finns. Kadri was obviously out for blood last night, notably going after Coyle and others, Finnish or not.

Fraser has weighed in. He doesn't opine specifically on suspension terms, but seems to think both hits call for suspensions:

Another one that I just don't get. Three games for an unintentional hit to the head for someone with no prior history would be fine, if they were actually throwing the book at repeat offenders and guys that were going for the head. Somehow, those other guys often get off with little or nothing far too often.

There's also the goalie factor. And, while they don't mention it, it wouldn't surprise me if they were influenced by the second hit. That's wrong, because it's not part of the analysis, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I can't argue about the inconsistency.

I respectfully disagree. While it may have been unintentional Kadri, has to have better awareness of where he is and what he's doing. I might agree that 3 games for that particular circumstance for someone with no history is steep had it not been for the later hit on Granlund. Neither of those plays are the result of playing tough, they're just simply cheap shots from my perspective.

I think 3 is about right for the goalie hit. I agree with Shanahan that it was more recklessness than intentional contact (the elbow tucked in part of the video). He still should have been aware of where he was, and is now paying for it.

The second play I still don't have an issue with.

I couldn't agree more

I doubt Pacioretty gets anything but there have been plenty of surprises already this year out of Shanahan's office.

I didn't really expect anything but he has a "history", does he not?

This game will keep Shanny busy. All started with Orpik's hit and the history from the Cooke hit. Two periods to go and I don't think they are done.

Orpik's hit should have been a penalty but I don't think there was malicious intent, he thought the puck was gonna get to Eriksson and was going for a big hit. If the puck came off the boards at a different angle and went to Eriksson it would have been a good clean hit. Then again I have only seen that replay one time so I don't have a perfectly clear image of it.

Neal will hopefully get 5+ games for that knee. I am thinking 10+ for Thornton, purely based on Shanny's past. But with him, who knows, anything could happen.

Neal full of sh*t after the game, Thorton knows he was completely out of hand. 5-10 for Neal, 20+ for Thorton. What will actually happen is anybody's guess, which is why the league is still second tier.

I thought Orpik's hit should have been a penalty. I also think it deserves at least a one-game suspension; it's one thing to time a hit to coincide with the puck arriving, it's another to assume that a bounce off the boards will happen at the right moment. Eriksson obviously relaxed when the puck bounced behind him, so he wasn't prepared to be hit.

Neal should be suspended and Thornton plain blew a gasket. As enforcers go, he's been very stand up, but he lost his composure badly tonight.
