NXG Tongue Solutions

Recommended Posts

So in trying to get these dialed in, I've found that the skates feel best with no insert at all. I find that the comp insert cuts into the top of my foot and feels really unnatural with regard to toe snap. Short of trying to track down a set of 6.5-7.5 APX 1 tongues (thick white felt doesn't leave me with enough volume), are there any solutions out there via Bauer or 3rd party to fill the insert space as a proxy, but without actually doing anything?

Basically I'm just looking for a second snap in layer to protect the part of the tongue that normally sits underneath the insert from being bit and ruined by wax laces. i don't have lacebite issues using them this way, I just want to ensure the longevity of the stock tongue.

Having had the same issues, my thoughts are that it might be best to just use a completely broken-down pair of med. flex inserts. Otherwise, maybe find some ballistic nylon and have a couple layers sewn together with a snap on the bottom.

My solution was to get new skates, but it doesn't sound like you're quite there yet.

I love the skates aside from this minor issue. I'm thinking maybe strips of tufftek with the snap installed or something along those lines.

Try a thin (1/16 to 1/8") piece of leather. Punch some holes in it and run your laces through it to keep it in place.

I've done that for a couple people and it seemed to have "fixed" the issue.

Needs to be replaced about every 6-months though as it gets wet and the laces break it down.

I would replace the tongues with something like the Bauer Supreme ones circa the 7000 model or Vapor 10. They were on the thin side while still having decent thickness to prevent leave bite.

Along these lines, maybe a strip cut out from a beat up gore-tex jacket if you have/can get hold of one. Preferably one with snaps. Would solve the water-damage issue.

It's been addressed in the new skate. They found that in certain skate sizes, they weren't flexing as they were supposed to. So, you would most likely be able to retrofit the new inserts on your T1 NXGs.

Thanks JR, I'll have to grab a set when the new line hits stores. I presume its namely an issue on the smaller sizes within the senior range as the insert covers more of the tongue (Mine are a 7C).

To those suggesting a swap: I really do like the feel/contour/thickness of the tongue itself, so I'd prefer not to go "aftermarket" here.

I have a buddy who plays tongues out with his NXGs and has been experiencing lace-bite for awhile now. He also has pretty beefy shins, you think it'll help if he removes his inserts? I guess its worth a shot either way.

I solved my lace bite by using the lacing technique describe in the first (2:11) portion of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOE28brAcEc

I was over-tightening my NXGs at first and suffered lace bite and ankle chaffing. By altering my lacing technique; keeping the bottom 6 eyelets a bit looser and locking those eyelets down with the method described in this video, and then tying the top 4 eyelets a bit tighter, I've eliminated all lace bite and chaffing in my skates.

I have to say that I've had to adjust the way I lace as well with the NXG. I've never had skates this stiff before. I find that if I tighten them up the way I did my old skates, I get terrible lace bite and i feel my movement to be negatively impacted. Old habits die hard so more than a few times during warm up after a few laps I've had to go to the bench to loosen my skates. never thought I'd be doing that, I used to have to stop to tighten.

I also noticed I was having an issue with one foot, so following one of the helpful posts here, I swapped the inserts (putting the left one in the right and vice versa) and it seems to have cured itself. strange that as they seem symmetrical. oh well, whatever works,

I don't think I could get away with a felt tongue in these boots, they're so much lower volume then the rest of the supreme line.

Per my original post, I don't have any lacebite issues. I just hate the feel of the tongue insert and don't want to ruin the "raw" part of the tongue by not using the insert.

Kessel: Is the thickness of that A&R pad substantial? If its thin enough to where I wont notice it I may give that a shot.

I swapped the tongue out on my NXG's due to where the inserts snap into the tongue. I now have RBZ tongues on them and they feel 100x better!

I found those snaps super painful on the top of my foot. Odd design there.
