Fm580 trouble

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I bought a medium Fm580 cage for my medium CCM v08. After I installed it feels like the chin cup is a little to far up, almost on my mouth. I installed it so the two clamps at the top are above the last wire and not under it (which the manual said to do the opposite of). Should have went up to a large or is thus just how the cage fits

Sure, but a medium cage may not fit your face as it sounds like here. No issues with running a large cage on a medium helmet. It's really quite common.

Oo ok both very good points. I didn't know if it was common for mismatched sizes. Out of curiosity where does the size difference come into play. Is it how far the mask comes down

I used a small cage on my medium helmet. And IMO every cage i put on feels a little loose. Take it off, wrap a layer of tape around the part of the bar it will be on, wrap it back up and screw it in. I did that for a bit before i figured its no big deal.

Personally, the CCM chin cup did not fit me but the size of the cage was ok overall. I switched to a Shockdoctor chincup which fit more snug on my chin, which solved that problem. Not sure if they are still available but I'd also look into alternative chin cups.

Secondly, the front clips on your helmet can be positioned up or down. As in your photo, which has the clips in the "up" position, you might want to try it in the "down" direction with your medium cage and see how that feels if you haven't already.

Good luck.

ahhhh...just re-read the second sentence of your original post. whoopsies.

I returned the medium already but before doing so had the clips in the down position and it was a little high. Now it sits well but I feel like the cup wants to move under my chin. Honestly makes me want to switch to a visor just for ease

CCM FM580 cages were not designed to go flaps up for the most part, it sits much differently when you install them flaps up on a lot of people.

Don't worry about it feeling loose. Cages need to move too.

Wait so it's meant for the flaps to be different then the picture I posted?

No, the picture shows the correct mounting. You just need the correct size, and as someone else pointed out, if needed you can swap out the chincup.

The FM580 chin cup is a floating design - I found even by rotating it over and hooking it under the bottom lip of the cage, it helped to "break in" so that the chincup sat lower instead of tending to ride up. The chincup is a bit stiff out-of-the-box, but if you keep forcing it downwards or hook it like I did and leave it a few days I found that helps too.

That is not correct mounting, i mean...i guess theres two ways to mount, but flipping the clips is how it should be IMO. Use every cage-combo pic on all retailer sites as a reference.

Not that I disagree with you but CCM'S instructions do say that there are two ways to mount the clips. If I do mount the other way the cage is super low.

Just a heads up...I went from a medium 480 to a medium 580 and have the exact same issue as crispy...my chin cup sits up around my mouth. Just picked up a new Bauer Profile II instead.

It might not seem right to you, and there are indeed plenty of pictures out there that show otherwise, but buy one yourself and follow the instructions that come with it and you'll realize what I am saying.

CCM provides a booklet with the FM580 that shows compatibility and mounting on various CCM and Reebok helmets. For an FM580 on a CCM Vector V10, the picture above is indeed correct.

If you have the wrong size cage and try to mount it the other way to accomodate the chin cup - now you've created another problem. The cage won't line up properly against the J clips on the sides of the helmet, and you're just asking for trouble when you take a knock to the cage and it drives your chin upwards since it has no support at the top.

The V10 and FM580 are not the easiest helmet combo to size correctly - I've seen plenty of kids wearing them wrong and it took me a fair amount of time and effort to properly fit an FM580 on both a V10 and a Reekbok 11K,

Colin
