Where to find decent practice jerseys w/out having to pay $10 shipping?

Recommended Posts

Any local hockey stores in your area? You may end up spending $10 regardless on gas if you don't live that close to one. Other than that, I can't think of any other options.

Amazon? If you're a Prime member, shipping should be free. Otherwise, what's the limit - something around $30 for free shipping? I don't remember for sure.

Online retailers might be difficult, unless your a breakaway platinum member at Total Hockey where you get free ground over 25. also, on rare occasions ice warehouse runs lower free shipping specials. You could also bundle your jersey with other purchases to get over a free shipping plateau.

I just became a platinum member at Total Hockey and it basically pays for itself. It's only $40 and you will receive $60 to spend and 10% off your first purchase with it. You can buy it online, so if you plan on making future purchases on gear or anything like that I would highly recommend it. As Stewie said, you get free ground shipping over $25. No fees or anything are included, it's a lifetime membership.

I think you're on the wrong site. Around here, an online purchase of a practice jersey requires AT THE VERY LEAST the purchase of a new pair of gloves or a stick... either would easily put you in the "free shipping" tier for many of the online retailers.

That's how they get you. Sure we'll give you free shipping if you buy $99 or more. Major online stores suck. That $10 they charge you didn't cost them $10 to get it to you either. They use "fullfillment" centers located in every region and get huge volume discounts from shipping companies. Then they charge you $10 when it only cost them $4. Nice way to make some extra jing.

the "man" trying to get you? put it into perspective...how much would you spend in gas to drive to a store to pick up a jersey. you're on the wrong site complaining about 10 dollars.

As someone who works for a major hockey retailer and personally fulfills online orders on a daily basis out of my STORE (that's how we do it), I can tell you first-hand that you're off-base here.

I've shipped hats to customers who live 5 minutes away (yes, that can be annoying, but that's how it is online) in a 10x8x8 box that weighs 1 lb and an in-town rate isn't even close to $4.

Sorry to go off topic, but if I pay $40 for a membership, they'll give me $60 to spend on their site?

Correct. The $60 gets applied to your account after 15 days. Also, if you live near one of their stores you get free skate sharpening on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

this makes it seem like every hockey store is Amazon. They don't have that kind of pull nor volume to negotiate drastically reduced prices, and hockey stores are fairly regional so their "distribution centers in every region" is like what, 2-3 spots in the US? Shipping is expensive nowadays, not sure if you have tried to ship a stick out recently. The problem the original poster has, is that flat rate shipping does not care if you can ship this item in a padded envelope etc. The balancing of all the items online hockey shops ship out comes out much greater than 4 a package.

Most hockey retailers offer free shipping above the 75 dollar plateau because they can absorb the shipping at that margin in order to make the sale. It costs the same to ship a 60 dollar stick as it does a 260 dollar stick, roughly, however they can absorb the 10 bucks flat rate much easier with the increased profit they will make on the item.

yes. I don't really understand membership at the lower levels, unless your too broke for the 40 up front.

Right - that's HM's mentality. They needed an East Coast presence to cut down on their shipping from CA and that's why you have DCs in NJ/MA and now soon to be NH.

TH has a DC in each market they are in.

Free return shipping as well with Plat.

I don't understand why HM is being put on the spot here, but yes shipping is expensive from California to the East Coast.

We have DC's in NJ and MA, but only ship from there when we need to. If the items are available here in California, they will be shipped from here.

But to return to the topic, calling customer service and being nice/reasonable, you can probably get a discounted shipping rate at almost any online retailer for just a jersey.

I don't think you are being put on the spot, he was just mentioning that by opening east coast stores it helps with shipping on that coast, as a counter point to where the poster made it seem like every online retailer for hockey has distribution centers set up throughout the US as though they are run like amazon. Even with this polar approach, it still costs a bunch for you guys to ship from Cali to anywhere in the Midwest or down to Florida, if anything JR is defending online retailers as a whole.

I forgot to mention your last point though, as I specifically remember reading another time where you helped someone out with a lower cost shipping item. I don't think a lot of people realize that they can negotiate this, instead of paying the flat rate, but they wont get free shipping on lower cost items, it just wouldn't make any sense. Customer service are there to help make the deal, utilize them.

Maybe not being put on the spot, just not sure why we were mentioned at all. No worries though, was just curious :]

We will have our orders being shipped from Texas soon, so that will help on shipping, and more importantly, transit time to all of our East Coast customers :]

And yes, contacting customer service is always a good idea. The representatives are almost always willing to work with you if it is a reasonable request

similar to amazon, not a ton of options.

Are you looking for something particular, re: quality, brand, color?

Depending on where you are geographically, if there's no local hockey stores, you might try Dick's Sporting Goods or the like, the ones around here usually have one-color CCM practice jerseys for around $12-$14.
