Good shoulder pads for newbie in ice?

Im starting ice soon and im wondering on what are some good shoulder pads for someone like me.

CCM U+ Fit 05 Sr. Shoulder Pads, use this as a starting point. Do not get less protection than this.

Stay away from Shoulder pads like the Sherwood 5030, they will get you injured.

Stay away from the top end nhl shoulder pads they are over kill. Unless you can get some CCM CL's they are awsome.

Id look into getting great elbow pads before worrying too much about shoulder pads. Better shoulders will help you in checking leagues and maybe when falling into the boards, but its a good idea to always brace for an impact using your elbows.

That being said, i second getting something midrange (more protection than the 5030 but cheaper and less bulky than pro level stuff)

I just recently started wearing shoulders after taking a brutal shot to the chest area. I hadn't worn them for pick up hockey ever, but finally I started to. Got a pair of Mako M5's for like, $100 or around there. People here rave about CCM CL's, but I'm not sure if you can get them anymore. The new RBZ line up is very light and not bulky, but I found the M5 to have better chest protectiong for blocking shots, etc.

If you're playing in beginner's leagues and what not, just find something that's not bulky and cheap. Nobody is going to be shooting very hard (probably not even above waist level either).

You want a good shoulder cap to prevent injury if you get rubbed into the boards in a collision.

i had them. One day this guy drives his shoulder into my chest while my head was turned. F'ed my lungs up for three months. 5030 has no chest protection. Then I switched to a beefed up pair of shoulder pads and they were to bulky and hot. Then I down sized to the ccm fit line they were great for bear league. Then the ccm cl came along and I was bored so I got them and fell in love with then. Super light and stayed light during the game and excellent ventilation not to mention the protection was more than I needed.

At this point it may be difficult to find the fit05 shoulders, unless you want to go used. The newer RBZ line of shoulders I feel offers great value at every price point, you might want to take a look there and gauge your needs. If they fit you well, I feel the last three CCM lines have all been great

I am not in the market for new shoulder pads, but it was slow at work yesterday so for the hell of it I tried on the RBZ130 shoulder pads they retail for $90 these are the first pair of CCM shoulder pads I have put on since I was about 12 and I thought they where great. Very comfortable did not feel restricted very low profile. I would defiantly suggest them or any of the higher models. From looking at RBZ110 online they look a little different and would want to see them first before suggesting them to someone. I also tried on the APX2 shoulders and they where nice they just seemed a little beefier probably because its top of the line vs mid level. We don't have any higher end CCM shoulders for me to compare the two.

Check out the reebok hybrids, you can get them for cheap and they provide a pretty high level of protection while not being overly restricive or bulky

I play world for inine hockey so and i have ice sakted before. i talked to the coach and he said hes going to put me in a little bit of a high leuge. so am i going to need any better shoulder pads?

When I first started playing ice, I bought one step down from top of the line (NikeBauer XXVs) & I have been very pleased with the protection (mainly from falls, but I've been smashed into the boards/glass a few times too even in a non-checking league) & the mobility (I hardly notice them once I get warmed up & start playing). However, the only other shoulder pads I've ever worn were some bulky lacrosse shoulder pads back in high school years ago...

In your case, you should be good with a low to mid level pad (unless you are playing check, which you did not mention). Look for something with good sternum coverage, which is something you don't get from Sherwood 5030s. There are good suggestions in this thread- the CCM line is great, the Reebok Hybrids can be had for cheap if you like that style, and I've heard good things about the Mako line. I personally play in mid-level Bauer Vapors, which I upgraded to after fracturing my sternum taking an accidental butt-end a couple of seasons back. Best bet is to try stuff on, see what you like, and see how it works with your elbow pads and pants in terms of coverage and mobility.

That's fine; still go with the same suggestions, but lean towards mid-level instead of low end.
