Reduce toe box volume

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any idea how to reduce toe box volume? I've got a touch of wiggle room in mine above my toes in my VH skates, and despite them fitting better than my Mako 2s, coming from a skate with next to no room is a little disconcerting.

Buy some ratty old used Bauer Supreme skates off ebay for dirt cheap and cut the felt off the tongue and shape it to fit the toe cap. Attach some double-sided carpet tape to the back of the tongue bit and stick it inside the toebox.

I have used gel pads, any kind will do as long as they are big enough to fit across the width of the toe box. Then cut them to shape and glue in. Search Amazon for gel pads for feet, there are plenty of options there. Alternatively you can buy gel pad sheets

Look into the company who makes the EzeeFit booties. They make one for the forefoot.

Also, you can move the VH tongue further downward into the toe cap to take up more room. Or order a custom/longer tongue from Scott at VH that will take up more room.

Would I need to -rebake the tongue if I moved them down further?

It's just on with velcro, why not try it and see how it feels?

When I had a tongue problem Scott suggested a rebake, so maybe? You could probably spot heat any areas you have issues with though. It just takes a sec though, so maybe just see what it feels like.

Why not put some felt or neoprene that you can buy from a craft store into the area. Or maybe put them into your socks.

There are many ways to try and get it to work without having to modify your skates too much. As long as the fit is correct, you shouldnt have to make changes to the skate itself

Ended up creating a set of inserts for myself. Put some industrial-strength velcro (hook side) on the roof of the toe box, and then created craft foam inserts the same shape as the toebox area in varying thicknesses (2mm, 4mm, 6mm, etc.) with loop-side adhesive velcro on the back. Allows me to change how much volume/toe stub I have in the toe box depending on what I want on each day. :)
