Bad sharpen job or not?

Recommended Posts

I had a lhs do a sharpening the other day it was a 90/50 and the glide area looks ruff with lines running crossways to the blade spaced about a 1/8 of a inch apart, I would expect this area to be smooth or is this normal.

Bad spinner too, I'm willing to bet.

They'll wear out quickly...especially if someone who hasn't been taught the right way to dress the wheel gets a hold of one!

I need to replace my spinners, it's getting harder to get great dressing out of them

How long have you had your spinners? I've only had my X01 for a year now but trying to get an idea for how long they may last.

Using a bad spinner and not noticing the poor finish is bad technique. 90/50 is not a popular setting, so unless they are pushing it in store, I can't imagine wearing one out quick. In the 5+ years I've been doing FBVs, I've only wore out one and that's because one of my customers would bring in darn nitinol blades. :-)

I'm glad to hear you say that about your spinners not wearing out. I asked when I first got my X01 6+ years ago how you can tell when a spinner was worn out and I think JR said something to the effect of "you'll know by the sparks coming out when you dress the wheel". I've only had one do that... the first one and that's because the washer on the drag cap wasn't allowing the spinner to spin. I've since rectified that and it hasn't happened since. I figure that the shape of the spinner isn't going to change and as long as I can still see uniform diamond coating with no worn spots, it's still good. I've always thought it seemed like these things were lasting an awful long time so it's reassuring to hear someone who uses theirs WAY more than I do say that he hasn't worn his out.

To clarify, I do wear out spinners, quite quickly due to my volume, but unpopular ones like the 90/50 last a long time. Visual and sound clues don't always let you know when they go bad or when you get a bad one from Blackstone.

Jimmy just out of curiosity, with your volume how long is the service life of your spinners? And if you don't mind sharing, how often do you re-dress your wheel? Do you go by every so many pairs or by feel/sound?

We wear out quite a few as well. And sometimes, I replace them even though the diamond might still be good, but the drag cap also wears on the top of the spinner and keeps on spinning without resistance. Since drag caps are very cheap, we try to flip them every couple of weeks or so to prolong the life of the Spinner.

If your drag cap looks like a vinyl record, flip it. Then when that side gets grooved, replace.

Most of them, for several years. You will be able to see the grit wear down on the spinner.

I thought it was bad and could tell there was a lot of drag when skating I felt slow and glide was not there.

That's exactly what I would expect from your description.

My drag cap locks up and stops the spinner from rotating.

Then the wave washer is too tight. Remove it and compress it a bit.

I've done that a bunch of times, it doesn't change at all. I've developed a workaround but now the belt is slipping a little, I really need to get that addressed.
