briantortilla 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2015 I just bought my first new pair of skates and the shop sharpened them for free. The edges look good but they ground off a significant portion of the blade holder when they sharpened the toe of the blade. Is this normal or should I ask for a discount or a new pair of skates. I am completely new so sorry if this is a dumb question.http://imgur.com/5mbx6S7
GreatestAmericanBeardo 258 Report post Posted December 29, 2015 Pic isn't loading for me, but IMO, you should ask for NEW skates period. the holder should never be compromised.
briantortilla 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2015 The picture should work now.
laserrobottime 149 Report post Posted December 29, 2015 I'd take them back to the shop, that portion of the holder isn't structural but since the skates are new they can put a new holder on it and won't have to even the blades out. A new holder is all that is needed, you don't need new skates. You could also ask them for a discount in putting light speed 2 or edge holders on so you'd have replaceable steel. chippa13 1844 Report post Posted December 29, 2015 If that is the care that the shop puts into a sharpening then I'm not sure I would want them doing other, more involved work on my skates. Best option, in my opinion, would be to get the shop to replace the skates and then take them elsewhere for sharpening and the like.
Buzz_LightBeer 975 Report post Posted December 30, 2015 Realistically it isn't a big deal. You'll do plenty worse to the holder throughout the course of playing in them. That being said it's likely a newer guy on the sharpener who should know better.

boo10 323 Report post Posted December 30, 2015 I had a shop do that to my holders. Didn't really bother me until I put Step XL runners in and saw that the top of the runner is fully exposed. If they're new skates, I'd make the shop replace the holders. They've damaged your skates due to carelessness or improper training. They should compensate you. briantortilla 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2015 Now one of the runners is creaking/clicking quite badly after an hour on the ice. I am just going to return the skates and buy from someone else.
DarkStar50 680 Report post Posted December 30, 2015 I would suggest you upgrade your investment in skates. Going by the holder, $160 at retail is the max price point you would have paid for that skate in a Senior size. For the additional $50 to go to the $210 price point, it is a much better utility of spending your money, aka bang for your buck. There you have it, Economics 101 combined with the used car salesman approach.
