Recommended Posts

Well I've been rushing to get everything done, applications, scholarships and all that junk. Any of you guys doing this stuff too?

So far I've applied to:

Boston U

American U

Truman State

Michigan State

Drake U

Southeast Missouri

I've been accepted to SEMO (Southeast) but I don't think I will be goign there, unless of course no one else accepts me...

Share your experience.

I went to a couple colleges, and still no idea where i want to go. Applied to:

Uconn

Fordham

Loyola

Marist

Fairfield

And was accepted into every one except Fordham. Fordham wasnt my top choice anyway. It has a great campus, but step out of the front gate, and you're in the ghetto.

Went through this all last year. How much is tuition on schools (ballpark) for you guys? I know it varies a little, so I wouldn't mind if it was "tiered". I'm Canadian as well, so our process was a little less stressful. I didn't have to goto all of the colleges and stuff. I stayed at home :(. For refrence I applied to 3 Universities for Political Science (Social Science) and applied to my first choice university (McMaster, where I live) a second time for Math. I am in the process of chaning from Social Sciences to Humanities for English with a minor (hopefully in math). Good luck to you guys applying and try to think about the future and job oppurtunities. I didn't and may have lost a year of schooling and $5G's for it.

I'm a Junior this year, but I have really been stressing about this alot recently. It's something I have been thinking about constantly in the classroom as well as on the ice and in the weight room.

If I don't get a scholarship to go play anywhere (Michigan would be my first choice), I am probably either going to Niagara University and (attempt to) walk-on to their D-1 team, or go to UB (a much better school than NU) and play Juniors while I'm there.

I'm probably going in as an English major with a minor in U.S. History.

Thockey...From the NY area?

Yep, im from NY. Theo, which community college do you go to? My parents have been saying that i should really look into going to a school closer to home such as Queens college or a community college(Nassau) then going to a school i like after a year. I havent really put much thought into it, but i'd much rather to go to a private school that i like. I have a couple friends that graduated last year who had the idea to go to nassau then a college they like, and i can tell you, they'll be staying at Nassau. Im afraid it'd happen to me too.

Eazy, im expecting to be throwing down quite a hunk of change on tuition and board. I believe the schools im looking at are around $30,000 a year.

Thats the only thing that really concerns me. It would be a pretty picture after i blow upwards of 30grand a year on a school that i dont like when i get on campus.I dont want to be up to my kneck in debt after 4 years. I'll just wait and see what ideas i/my parents come up with in the future.

Is that $30,000 all inclusive, like you've worked out the extras like food, clothes, spending and a laptop/computer?

My sister is looking at going to U of T for Engineering (which is kind've ludacris since McMaster is possibly the best in Ontario for it), but she's looking at around $15,000 all inclusive and thats Canadian. I can't believe you guys can afford that much, thats a pretty penny.

LkptTiger - If you don't mind the reading I've found english to be good. I'm in a theoretical Eng and a longer genres Eng right now. I prefer the longer genres, but Theories isn't terrible. I'd rather read a story than sift through dribble in a text even if the dribble is much shorter.

Just make sure you guys get a variety of courses in and stick to what you've always done. Don't stray from the things you've taken all the way up keep them in the schedule as a safety.

Even though in Canada it isn't really a rush, you still have to worry about it. I'm in my senior year...it's fairly hectic right now. I'm still considering whether my marks will warrant an application to UoT (where I want to go) Scarborough for their undergrad Neurology Co-op. I live in vancouver, so it's more than just a matter of money if I make it; I'd have to move and all that junk. Mind's just racing all over the place, but oh well, that's what happens...

Youre right there isnt really a rush in Canada, except theyve started making grade 10s take a halfcourse called Careers (which, for many in my school, created a "rush"), where you have to pretty much map out your career, and do a crapload of self reflecting. I finished the course, but I was in a frenzy trying to figure out what I'm doing with my life. I think I'm gonna go to UWO (otherwise known as Western) or Queens for undergrad, and then to Marquette so I can take their sports law program.

Kirsch, are you a Missourian? Just asking because I don't know any non-Missourian who applied to Truman or Southeast. I'm from St. Louis so I know at least 3/4 of my school kids are going to either Truman or University of MO-Columbia. After having a busy 1st semester, I'm also pretty finished with my application and stuff, only SAT II awaits for tomorrow. My parents originally suggested applying for 10+ Colleges, but I couldn't fulfill the essay requirements and dropped a few. As my counselor said, this admission fee alone could be my first year tuition :lol:

This is my list...Most of them are going to be tough, but even if I get accepted to two really good ones, that'll do for me.

1.Yale University Early Action - I got my face crushed and got rejected.

2.Dartmouth College (My real first choice, great school, great hockey)

3.Duke University

4.Boston College (hoping to get some money, but I heard they barely hand any scholarships to anyone)

5.Northwestern University

6.Washington University in STL

7.Princeton University

8.University of Missouri - Columbia, Journalism and Honors College - Accepted

9.University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

Dropped: Colgate, Georgetown, Cornell.

My first considerations would be colleges that offer me some money, especially WashU, but if I don't get any, I could be easily in $100,000 hole by the end of my senior year in College. On a side note, I was told that if I talked to College Hockey coach, that alone would dramatically increase my chances of getting in, even if I'm not excellent. I'm sure it's worth a try, I might have to call them for Hockey and Taekwondo.

Smartest thing I've read in this whole thread. Where you go makes a difference, but it's really just what oyu make of it. Just make sure you don't end up too much in the hole trying to find yourself.

Also, that whole career thing in tenth grade sounds retarded. I'm sorry, it really does. Tons of people change their majors in their first few years. I know of people who have been TAs for classes and then changed their majors. I don't understand why a school system would assume that kids 15 or 16 know what they want to do with their lives. Really, really, freaking stupid.

I've gone to a few schools and WashU was definitely my favorite. Just cool people and a nice academic program. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a college.

Hofstra!

My brother goes to hofstra. He's constantly telling me that i should go there, but i really dont like the atmosphere. I was at the law school there the other day, and it seemed 20 times better than the regular parts of the school.

If they can offer me some money, i'd be glad to go there. Hell, i could be going to Adelphi for very little or no money. But im not even going to bring Adelphi into consideration, because i know i should be at a better school. I want to go check out Michigan State before i decide what school im going to go there. A kid i know is going there for only 7grand out of his pocket per year. And from what i've seen and heard, its got a real nice campus.

I lived in St. Peters for around 5 years, and I have a bunch of friends that live there. Right now I live in Iowa.

One of my friends mentioned Southeast, so I went ahead and applied because it was free. I really don't think it is the right college for me, because it doesn't seem like it would be challenging at all. Truman looks pretty interesting, and my debate coach is an alumni.

What kind of marks do you guys need to get into college/university there?

I'm doing Engineering at the University of Alberta next year, the "minimum" is an 80 straight through Grade 12, but a competitive average is an 87. So if you apply with an 83 average you may not make it in :S

Depends on the school, and in reality there is no true minimum grade you need to get into a school. The IVYs look for top notch SATs and GPAs, but having them alone doesn't guarantee anything. The hs you come from; how many other people apply to those schools from your school, specifically; matters, your location matters, your income (whether or not you apply for financial aid) matters, your extracurriculars matter and so does your race/ethnicity. There's a lot of factors, and no true cutoff. I know people who got rejected from Wash U StLouis with 1550s and GPAs around 4.0, and I know people who got into Harvard with the same grades.

Until last year, it used to be that anyone from my school who had over a 4.2 GPA and about 1320 in SAT I was literally guaranteed admission to WashU and indeed, WashU accepted everyone in that category and above. This year, it's different and they deferred a lot of people from my school, even people in that bracket.

I don't think its so much to have the kids choose a career, but to notify them that decisions are going to be coming up in the next few years and they need to start looking into future careers which they may look into. Ideally they choose a career which interests them and they will have a chance to thrive in, but in reality its a waste of time and of .5 of a credit (its mandatory in Ontario). It's really just a BS course and everyone, at least in my school, treated it that way. I think I did my only project the night before, came out with a good mark (mid 80's) and we were supposed to be spending the whole tenure researching.

I think WUSTL is sort of doing that because people treated it as a safety in the past. They'd go there if the slightly better schools (northwestern, IVYs, stanford, et al) don't accept them, but otherwise not really. Or at least that's how it ahppened at my hs. Everyone would use it as a safety and after a few years of accepting a bunch of people and having none go, they just stopped.

Someone has to explain to me how you can get above a 4.0 on your transcript. Does it have to do with APs or something? My hs treated APs just like any other course, so an A in them was just counted as a 4.0...

You're talking about a 4.2 on the 9.0 scale, right? We don't do GPA in Canada, and onyl take the SAT's if we're applying for American schools, so this is kinda new to me.

No, I think it's a 5.0 scale. Most public schools around here operate around that GPA system. We have Regular Courses and Honors/AP Courses in our school and...

In Regular Courses, we have

A = 4.0

B = 3.0

C = 2.0

D = 1.0

In Honors/AP Courses, we have

H = 5.0 (H is 96% or above)

A = 4.5

B = 3.5

C = 2.5

D = 1.5

Honestly, I think it comes out to be a fair grading system in our school. It's harder to get a B in Honors class than an A in regular class, especially English classes. Technically, it is possible for someone to attain 5.0 GPA, but we have required PE/Health classes that are regular, so our valedictorian, who never dropped an H currently has 4.85 GPA. He got into Harvard Early Action.

I got into all four of the colleges I applied to.

University of Michigan Ann Arbor

University of Michigan Dearborn-Honors

Michigan State-Honors

Michigan Tech

I still dont know where I am going but am leaning towards ann arbor.

The scale in our school is for regular classes

A=4.0

B=3.0

C=2.0

D=1.0

E=0.0

AP classes( You take a test at the end of the year and if you pass you get college credit)

A=5.0

B=3.75

C=2.5

D=1.25

E=0.0
