Newer Pant Models with Wider Legs

Recommended Posts

I recently picked up a pair of Tacks XF and the legs/hips are super narrow despite the tacks line being touted as more of a volume fit. The length and waist are fine in a medium but they feel pretty restrictive and constantly hit or get stuck on the top of my (also XF) shinpads.

Any suggestions for a current model that is wider in the hips/quads and doesn’t fit like a diaper? The Bauer HP Pro looks interesting if anyone has tried those. I would also give pro stock a look but I don’t have time to comb the usual places for a black medium pair in good/new condition. Another option could be the XF in a large but then they start to get a bit long and sloppy in the waist. Cheers guys.

True has some deal with Tackla, so their new pants have the classic Tackla fit. I’ve never had any wish for better than that. The fit, feel, function, and look are all great IMO.

I'm a Tackla guy.  If my current pair ever falls apart (It took the last ones 20 years,) maybe I'll look into these.

Same. I have a pair of Air 9000s that are still holding on from the ‘90s. They’re beat up, but still amazing.

I just grabbed some true A6.0 pants (older model) and the wide legs are fantastic.  I actually went to a junior size pants.  They are nice and snug around the waist and flare out at the legs.  No more shins getting caught and they still have that close fitting feel.  I don’t even unzip the legs.  They might be considered on the heavier side but I don’t really feel it while playing.  Very protective as well

You can actually still order pants direct from Tackla. Their selection is limited and the models are all the older ones (which is probably a good thing), though I was able to buy the actual Tackla version of the pants that True now sells in their name before True actually started selling them. Shipping isn't immediate but isn't that long given it being shipped from Europe.

I had a similar issue with XF feeling tighter through the hips/quads than expected. If you want more room up top without the diaper fit, the Bauer HP Pro is worth a look — it’s generally a bit freer in the thigh/hip area while still sitting pretty clean. Another option is trying a different cut within CCM/Pro Stock (some “HP” style builds are noticeably roomier than retail). If the XF large is too long, sometimes going up a size and relying more on the belt/suspenders to control the waist works, but I get not wanting the extra length.

The thigh flap of shins getting stuck is sometimes because your hockey socks aren't snug enough. If there's too much slack on the thigh region it won't keep the flap against your thigh and it can get caught up under the bottom of your pants. Of course this won't happen with all pants and shin guard combinations but your case it did. If pants and shins are the right size then in most cases having the hockey socks tighter will help this from happening.

The xf pro shin's thigh flap is adjustable so you can mess with the height of it, or remove it completely. It's not unheard of that this flap is removed by people and pros because the design of the flap for some shin guards is just bad.

You can try opening up the zipper on the pant legs but from experience, this rarely helps, especially if the issue is loose hockey socks.

If loose hockey socks isn't the issue, then it could be just a case of a bad combination of shun guard and pants.

Pants these days are trending towards a more snugger fit. I personally like it. It's like a mix of a girdle and pant.  Even with pros, you can see a lot of players are wearing snugger and shorter pants where the bottom of the pant barely covers any part of the kneecap or their shin guards. Bedard and mcdavid are good examples but there are much more.

Oh and fyi, CCM pants fit quite a bit smaller than bauer pants. I'm swimming in a Bauer medium and need to wear a Sr small or modern intermediate large, but fit into a CCM medium fine with it actually feeling pretty snug.  So if youre user to wearing a Bauer medium, that could be your issue in that you should be wearing a CCM large in terms of waist size.
