OV Stick

Recommended Posts

It’s in the PRO Hockey Sticks thread. I think it’s awesome and quietly kinda huge. When that guy started his company, the logo was a silhouette of Overchkin. Now they guy is breaking what was thought to be an unbreakable record using that brand. It’s kinda touching, honestly.

And, it’s awesome that someone is producing good sticks at accessible price. It started as a passion project and the guy who runs PRO seems to genuinely enjoy it and want to do a good job, and not just cash in first chance he gets. (Cue immediately selling his company to Halliburton or something haha)

Not to be Danny Downer here but I think we all would agree that its not the stick scoring the goals, it's the player.

I disagree actually. He made the switch around the same time his scoring drought ended last year. He looks like he's excited to shoot the puck again, as though he wants to see what happens every time he lets one go now. I didn't see that spark in him in the stretch before his switch. Confidence in your gear is a thing for pros too; like the Hot Hand Theory that was written off as a fallacy that turned out to hold up after a closer look at the data.

I'm not saying this as a Geppetto fanboy. While I have to admit that the Praux value offer is hard to resist (especially in the current economy), I'm quite critical of Geppetty overall. Makes me wonder what builds some of these pros have been using. Having said that, it's a huge accomplishment for Geppetty to go in there and dethrone the major players in the industry to supply one of the game's all-time greats in what will probably go down as the most salient chapter of his career.

I'm quite critical of his sticks as well but for the value & custom options sure they'll do the job. I know Ovi is not using a stick he currently offers to the general public. If you look at some Getty images of him using the PRO's recently you'll see the carbon weave is just like CCM FT Ghost or similar CCM sticks currently out

Edit: I can't even find the picture I'm looking for looks it like it is the standard 18k weave recently

Meh, I'm not buying it...well not fully. I have said here many times, some things work for players some things don't. While I truly believe in that I don't think it has all that much of an impact on elite level professionals. They've put in too much work for me to buy that.

We're talking the new all time leading goal scorer, not some plug who put up 40 out of nowhere.

Fedorov also wore his Grafs in at least one game of the conference finals.

If the elite level professionals agreed with you they wouldn't cheat on their sponsors.

Other players who were notoriously picky about their sticks:

  • Heatley: on podcast recently said that he was very standard in pretty much all of his, except for sticks. With sticks he had the same Easton build with a particular emphasis on balance.
  • Spezza was way more intense about it though, according to Heatley. He had his sticks catalogued and would request them by city and number.
  • Kovalchuk was notorious for his scrutiny of his sticks as well.
  • Mike Green missed CNT Stealth so bad he bought his used ones back from private collectors and hunted down NOS retail years after Easton stopped producing them.
  • Mogilny (the gear nerd GOAT) obsessed over his sticks and skates and would talk about them so much that it would annoy his teammates and coaches.

I'm sure the list would be huge if we had time and access.

You think the two are the same??? Personal preference is different from increased or enhanced performance...which is what you were eluding to earlier.

BTW, I know all about those examples and could probably add a few more.

Ovi used to use the g3 build when he was Bauer. Then when he went to ccm he only used I think the trigger asy? So I'm assuming his build is the one of the two that aren't offered by either Bauer or ccm anymore. Which is weird bc I thought there were still nhlers using a g3 build. Maybe he grew out of that build. The pic below does show a larger carbon weave pattern than the g3 weave on the shaft but the hosel and blade does appear to be the smaller checker weave of the g3/ one95 blades.

Right, funny thing is he used the G3 build earlier this season then went to PRO. I could've sworn I saw a game used stick with that CCM weave but now I look like an idiot lol. The blade is the same weave as the shaft on his sticks the 18K

What’s the difference?

I was assuming this was the small checkered pattern but now that I think about it, it's pretty high up to be a change in weave for the blade and that just looks like the matte paint on the dimple grip texture. So you're probably right
