Falling Down

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

This question is a bit embarassing, but here goes.

I played a great session of pick-up for about 2 hours this past Wednesday. Everything went well, afterwards we had some penalty shot drills (stick time), and on one of my attempts i had to bail head first to avoid crushing an undersized 16 year old kid. Like an idiot I put my arms out to cushion my landing and as I landed my left shoulder dislocated(By the way I have recurrent dislocations). I was angry with myself, because I know way back when; I was taught how to fall "properly" except now i can't remember those drills. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I have heard from many people that you are just supposed to roll out...1st nature is to throw your arms out to try and stop yourself, but that's also how my dad broke both his wrists....

Take a baseball slide. You may look like a moron, but you won't get injured.

If you don't have that kind of time, then roll, as FlyersYouth said.

FlyersYouth, they teach us pretty well in this area don't they? haha not.

Don't worry about crushing the kid, sounds like he chose to be behind the net a the wrong time, not your fault, and plus he probably plays hockey so he would know how to take a hit anywyas. Also I would work on stopping on a dime so you don't have to worry about falling

I agree with the baseball slide idea. If you have enough time to think about it, go for the baseball slide and try to make sure you land properly.

I know for skating sometimes we have to dive head first on the blue lines, get up, repeat. I think the technique we use for this drill would be beneficial in this situation. What I try to do is get as low to the ice as possible and just throw my arms out first, trying to land on my elbow pads and gloves first to reduce impact.

Your best bet is to turn and be parallel to the boards if you can, it will distribute the impact along your body. Otherwise try to let your shinpads take the brunt of the collision.

Don't go in head-first and have a cage-on-cage collision like I did.

I literally heard the ringing and saw the brilliant flash of stars.......

Thanks again everyone;

Shoulder held up well in yesterday's game, even after giving and taking some decent hits. Even got a chance to practise falling after being tripped on a breakaway (baseball style (into the goalie) : )

If only Ty Cobb played hockey, instead of sharpened spikes he could use actual blades, lol.
