Update I have all the gear now, I've got a deal on a CCM Composite. I went with a 25" based on how it felt when I was in a butterfly (I wish they had a 25.5", or maybe I will go 26" in a different brand the next time). I went with a Bauer Supreme line of skates, and even though it was the best fitting skate they still killed my feet a test skate. I've placed in a SIDAS footbed and it seems to have alleviated the pain while standing up (we will see if the pain returns during a skate). Another test skating tonight during warmups with the new hollow to see (my sharpener was a bit worried that I am going too shallow with a 3/4", but it's what I skate on normally so I think I will be ok). I have my first pickup game next week, my buddy who's a goalie is coming out to play on the opposite side to see. I'm both excited and nervous, first time a long while.

This is what happened to my friend with his mid-level Bauers, his steel kept on snapping near the same spot. We thought it was the steel quality (esp. due to the Bauer steel reputation at the time), but turns out his holders were damaged/misaligned somehow and causing a stress point, and so any little impact would cause it to fail.

The broken steel is likely caused by a misaligned holder; especially if they're breaking in the same spot. Get a knowledgeable shop to check the holder mount (to see that it's straight and also check that there are no loose rivets) or mail them to JR Boucicaut if you don't trust the shops nearby (if you mention your location, members may be able to point you to some competent local help). If the holders are properly mounted and aren't warped, you definitely shouldn't have steel constantly breaking.

My only caveat to being on the ice, make sure you can be safe. Kids that age get behind you, slide on the ice, etc. You need to be on alert and able to protect yourself (and don't want to fall on the kids!). I have been playing my whole life and 10 minutes into my first mite practice I was helping a kid and he lost his balance and went down so fast I couldn't react. His stick came up and got me right above the eye. Not bad, but bloody which freaked him out and a fraction of an inch from my eye.

They did have a very mild odor. It wasn’t a sweat odor more a neglected in a basement for a decade odor. Soaked them in oxyclean and washed in the washing machine. Now they are part of my high tech drying system.

I wish I could share info but I am not allowed. All I can say is there will be a huge shift in the retail industry coming soon.

That is cool, I remember painting layer after layer of ProtecToe on new skates though.

Still not sure how this alleviates lace bite, the pressure is still the same on the foot, it is basically just upside down lacing, what am I missing? The lace goes through the same pattern as inside out, just in opposite order.
