  1. Jeeeeeeeeeez that looks wild.
  2. I mean, for me the sharpening thing is more about convenience than cost. I usually either send my steel out or I'm forced to drive to a local shop and get it done which in both cases is kind of annoying to me. If I can go many months instead of weeks on a sharpening, I'm all about it. Usually only skating 2x a week.
  3. I'll probably start at 5/8'' for now on the stock XS steel but might move to 3/4'' if I end up getting Blacksteel.
  4. Anybody here have to get a less sharp profile after going True's? Was talking to a kid (yet another True lover) and he said he had to go from 5/8 to 1'' after getting the skates because he felt "his energy transfer was so much better". Not a big kid either... I weigh 195lb and use a 1/2 but I tend to like to dig in a little bit more.
  5. Yeah the stock 2x pro honestly felt pretty bad. Just very boxy and not "foot shaped" at all. Mako is still the best bone stock offering ever made IMO. FT2 is close but the toe box isnt very anatomical although the FT2 is a touch better than FT1. Either way I'm sure my True's are going to blow FT2 out of the water with fitment. I imagine a total custom 2X pro would be better than bone stock FT2 but at that point... Might as well just go True if you're not a pro paid to play/wear.
  6. Tried the 2X pro's on this weekend... Eek. Could just be me but I did not like the way they fit or felt at all. FT2 was much better in the same size and width. I was expecting a lot from that toe cap but it's still no Mako. Pretty let down. Good thing I have some True's coming next month.
  7. I may order some step black steel. Just a quick call to my pro shop and I'll let them sort out which size to get.. No idea what size I'm even getting to be honest so, don't know what holder size they went with.
  8. Got my True scan done today. Getting them with XS holder and the stock steel for now... Might toss Step in later. 3-4 week lead time, I'm guesing closer to the 4 weeks
  9. Getting my fitting around 1pm so... while not later on in the day it's at least not in the very morning. Will they go on pretty much like Makos? I usually had to unlace 2 full eyelets, put them on at an angle, etc. Kind of a PITA but I could probably skate in those totally unlaced. Could not do that with my FT1. And yes, the owner said I def needed to come in ASAP to try and avoid the ramp up for the NHL. Earliest they could do for fitting was this Sat so hopefully I can get them by early Sept. I'm actually going out of the country from Sept 12 - 23 so that would be kind of bad timing if they didn't arrive prior to that.
  10. Any advice for things to do/ask during fitting or when the skates arrive? One thing I want to ask them about is trying to fix my over pronation on my left foot. Have flat feet but maybe some other issues going on in knee/hips and my left foot specifically while on ice tends to always want to fall toward the inside edge. I know it's a bit of ankle weakness from injury incurred but I think it's also partly just my anatomy.
  11. Have my fitting scheduled for Sat. Hoping the lead time isn't too long and that there's no issues, I think fall/winter season starts in about 6 weeks. Ideally would want to get them on the ice a few times first before games, too.
  12. Good to know. I'll probably order the True's then thru my hockey shop with the XS + Blacksteel, and then if I like that feel and performance, order a back up set of runners.
  13. Actually, I just went to check STEPs website and they apparently make runners for the XS holder? They list the XS, E Pro and SB4.0. So... I could get the XS holder on the True's with STEP and be good. Do they back the Blacksteel for the XS holder or even the SB4.0? I'm not dead set on XS but it is nice to be able to have the ability to change steel on the go if I wanted and that black looks pretty sick.
  14. My FT1 steel was bad, about as bad as the old LS was years ago. I think I got... 4-5 skates on my runners before I felt the edges going. With my STEP previous to that, I could probably go 20+ skates before it really needed a sharpening and often it wasn't too bad. I felt a significant drop in grip with the stock FT1 steel where with STEP is was more of small, gradual reduction in edge. So yeah I'm kind of torn. Definitely want STEP but also don't want to feel like I'm up on my toes all game. I felt the stock set up on FT1 was more neutral and a bit easier on my feet/legs.
  15. Haven't been in this thread for months but I think I'm "biting the bullet" and getting fit for True's this weekend or next. Retail FT1/2 fit me okay but the toe box was too narrow because I have bunions. Got blisters, etc and no real way to punch out. Vapor too narrow in D size, too wide in EE. Is this new True holder very aggressively pitched like the old CXN? When I had Mako's I ended up putting 1/16'' shims (well, JR did the work....) under the front tower on 10' Step Steel to make me feel a little better balanced. Then I got used to FT1 holders and how they were either a little longer than CXN or even slightly less forward pitched (or maybe longer radius?) so I'm worried looking at this fairly short steel possible combined with a really forward pitched holder.
  16. Getting fit for these hopefully this week, if not next. Really excited for the toe cap but worried I won't like how stiff they'll be (2X Pro). Also really love that 90 day return policy on FT2.... but the toe cap was pretty narrow, killed my toes for the first few skates. With my pretty low volume foot and narrow heel, basically nothing else these days fit.
  17. I'm not in the industry but from the golfing world... It's not always universal but usually most shafts (in this case hockey sticks) that require more stiffness (in this case Flex rating) tend to be heavier. It's still pretty rare to find a 50g shaft that is more stiff than a 100g one. There's a lot of new matsci stuff happening, so light weight shafts are getting stiffer than ever, but in universal terms... you simply need more material to make it more stiff. I would assume that a 75 flex all else equal is maybe a few gram lighter than a 100 flex.
  18. This. Used to never tape the toe... after a few months of beer league it would be chipping and falling apart. Starting taping toe... Now the only reason I buy a new twig is because the old one is losing a bit of pop, or I just want something different. Toe (and blade overall) holding up way better, no chips or things falling off.
  19. Is West Side still good? I thought I heard their "best" skate fitter is no longer there. I don't totally trust HM or Pure (no offense to them) to do my scan and fit me 100% into FT2 or 2X's and everybody on reddit in the NYC area always recommends them.
  20. Definitely try a profiling first since my first instinct was that your new holder was possibly the next size up. Before you profile though, give it like... 3-4 hours in the skates to see if you can adjust. I went from Mako's with the CXN holder (very forward pitched) to the new XS holder (fairly neutral, longer radius) and it was very odd feeling right out of the gate. However, I just kept at it and within about 4 hours in the boot, I was pretty used to it. If you give it sometime and still don't like it, then go for the profile.
  21. I have yet to try on but yeah it's unlikely the stock 2X will fit me as well as stock FT2. Then again, there's always True...but since I fit fairly well into stock CCM now, I just don't see the reason to splurge on True when I'm only skating 2x a week.
  22. Haven't like Vapors in years now, but this toe has me intrigued. After going to FT1 from Mako, that perfect fit in the toe box is something I long for. I'm not super concerned about 2 piece vs 1 piece seeing as what... over 1/3 of the NHL is still in 2 piece construction? I'm way more concerned about that "glove like" fit and long term durability.
  23. Dunno, to me, U shape is like a flap, you peel it open and the entire inside is exposed. The straight open zipper I felt like I had to hold one side back to make the opening wide enough to my liking. Plus the straight zip bags they had didn't have external or internal pockets large enough for helmet or skates. Again, somewhat illogical but I just like having a large pocket for those 2 items specifically. I don't mind tossing tapes, pucks, etc into a large zip lock or other bag but I do like pockets for containing that stuff, too. One giant hole to just cram all my items into isn't for me.
  24. So I ended up in hockey monkey yesterday and picked up the Warrior Q20 bag. It felt pretty light weight, had the U shaped opening and side pockets for helmet/skate. I did see the pro stock bags but even though I do think they have better materials, they just don't really appeal to me as much. If this thing starts to tear up after only a year or two then I may consider something like Mammoth, C&B, etc. I'm probably very spoiled that my iTech literally lasted me 15 years.
  25. For me it's like 99% water/ice on my feet, 1% germs. It's a locker room; the second you walk inside like 9 billion germs slap you in the face.
