  1. I really appreciate the insight you have all provided. I've gotten to the point where I'm now putting them in low and hard consistently. I have found that the curve doesn't really affect my shot. I still like the 29/92/03 better than 88 overall, but I could play with either. I do not like the 28...just not for me, but that's a whole different discussion. While I agree that there are some similarities between a hard pass and a lower speed wrister, a true through-the-netter...not so much. Granted, not every shot we take has to be a rocket, but...those are what I'm practicing. Head-up, spot-pickin', 2-4" off the ice...rockets. Getting there...hopefully it translates to the frozen pondπŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ₯…πŸ’πŸ‘πŸ˜Ž Thanks again!
  2. Buzz...your Triflex comment reminded me...I used Koko 221 Custom Pro sticks from 1975 through college ('82). That was "my twig," but they stopped making them. Then around 1995 or so I saw one...it was an updated version. Of course I bought it. That sucker had so much fibre de verre, I could laid two of them across a creek and driven my car to the other side! Also great for doing curls.
  3. I really dig my HP45 pants. I am trying a Super Tacks girdle...when it arrives. Hope it doesn't join this list🀣
  4. Since we can't dry land train all day...I'm taking a break, and asking (anyone else who's bored)...what piece of gear were you dying to get your hands on that ended up being disappointment. Not to say that it wasn't any good...it just wasn't any good for you! Me...I grew up with the game in the 70's on Long Island. Naturally, I was an Islander fan, and when I was about 14, I moved to defense and I absolutely idolized Denny Potvin! I've played D and worn #5 for my entire (now five decade) career. I wanted a Lange helmet (became Northland) sooooo bad because Denny wore one. Well...I saved my pennies, and went into the pro shop at Twin Rinks (my home rink), and boom...I got me one! I have never worn anything so heavy and uncomfortable on my head in my life! Maybe it didn't fit right, or maybe I had the wrong head shape, but getting ready for practice...I would dread putting this thing on! It was so heavy that when I turned my head fast, it felt like it was going to tear it right off my neck. Anyway...about three miserable weeks later...CCM Pro Standard and never looked back. Still wearing the descendants of that helmet. Hey...it worked for Bossy and Trottier...and they weren't too badπŸ˜‰ Whatchoogot?
  5. The combination of wrist rolling, top hand separation, and a sweeping low following through seems to be helping. I was about 85% today with about 200 shots. It's funny, I just never concentrated on wristers before. I'd stay after practice and work on slapshots and one-timers (if someone else stayed) until the maintenance guy kicked me out. It's also been forever since I had this much practice time.
  6. More observations...cuz there ain't nothin' else to do... So...I am practicing with an 82 flex cut to come up to the same place it would with skates, so...it's probably like a 105 at this point. I'm sure that's not helping anything with my 165lb frame🀣 Rolling my hands more deliberately...is definitely helping...so is keeping my top hand farther out, so...thanks for that! Sure hope my stickhandling practice translates to the ice cuz...I'm actually getting good at it! This needs to end...I gotta skate! Ok...I'll be patient. We got enough dumba**es out there...don't want to contribute to that. If I owned a rink...I know where I'd be everyday! Stay frosty boys and girlsπŸ₯Ά
  7. I hear you. Let me be more clear...slap shots I've always seemed to be able to put anywhere. Low and hard boomers are not a problem. I've just always scored up high, and my coaches encouraged it as I was successful. Wristers...that's where I struggle to stay low with harder shots.
  8. Awesome input...thank you!
  9. Appreciate the response. I've been out there shooting quite a bit, and I am working on the technique including rolling my wrists. It occurred to me this afternoon that I may be standing too upright. The mechanics are harder to emulate off-ice than many realize. Every nuance is very different. I'm pretty determined, and I'm grateful for your input.
  10. I can try one for rec. wherein I gotta keep it low or hurt someone...use the P92 for my upper league games. I wonder if that'll screw up all the stuff that is second nature with the 92? Only one way to find out I guess 🀣
  11. My first pro gear...'77 Super Tacks...Cooper LIP Islanders gloves and Cooper pro pants (also Isles). Still have the pants and my second pair of LIP gloves...they're retired. Have to include Koho 221 Custom Pro...my stick until they stopped making them the old way. The last incarnation of the 221 had so much fiberglass...I felt like shooting with a piece of boat. Totally dig my new gear though...one of my old skates weighs more than both of my 2XPro's or AS1's!
  12. Hey All...working on wristers...low and hard. Seems no matter where I release, how far forward or back I bring it in the windup, how much I roll my hands, how deep I bend on the forward follow-through...my shot wants to stay a minimum of a foot off the ice...errrr...garage floor. If I ease way up off the gas...I have a little better time of it, but...not gonna score on those. Every once and awhile...I get a nice low hard one, but I can't put my finger on how. Any thoughts? I'm using a P92, and I am hoping that a P88 is not the answer cuz I love that P92/29/ W03 for everything else! Interesting enough...boomers...those I can put wherever I want fairly consistently. I'm teaching remotely, so...I have a lot of practice time 🀬😎
  13. Hey All, Been playing forever (seems) and now I seem to have a lot of time on my hands😠. Historically, I'm a defenceman, and in college it was all about top-shelf wristers and boomers for me. That's where I scored...consistently. Now I'm playing in several leagues. Some are fairly intense and I can still shoot "my style." Some are more "rec-level" and the last thing I want to do is hurt somebody! I am trying to use this downtime we all seem to have to strengthen my weaker areas...for me...stickhandling, low corners, and 5 hole! Stickhandling...I got that...a lot of..uhhh...stickhandling practice. That one is a pretty straight return...I'm doing it a lot...it's getting better. On the other hand...I have a mat...a net...and a backstop in the garage. The net has a tarp on the front...cutouts for the corners and 5-hole. I can hit corners high all day with my eyes closed. I cannot consistently keep pucks low, and I can't hit the 5 for money! I'm all around it...inches...It's driving me nuts. I'm trying to follow through as close to the ice (ground) as possible, rolling my hands, transferring weight, back foot, front foot, being mindful of mechanics...I am getting better over the past few days keeping them low-er...but zero accuracy. Any suggestions short of asking my teammates to watch what I am doing and coach me...cuz that's gonna be a while it seems. Thanks folks!
  14. Helmets: Tacks 710 and Resistance. Visor: Bauer HDO Cage: Bauer Re-akt Titanium Shoulder pads (if I wear 'em) Bauer Supreme 1S/Frankenpads (Cooper SB94 caps) Elbow pads: Bauer Supreme 2sPro Gloves: CCM HG97 & UltraTacks, Bauer Nexus 2n, Vapor APX Pro, Vapor Vapor 1x Pro, Supreme 1s Pro, Classic 4-roll, CCM FT1. Shinguards: Bauer Nexus 2n, CCM AS1, Jofa 9060 Pants: CCM HP45, Warrior QRL. Skates: CCM Super Tacks AS1, AS3Pro, & Ribcor 80k. Sticks: CCM Jetspeed FT3 Pro and AS2 Pro...yeah...I'm a gear ho. Still have all my college gear too, but...it's pretty much just nice to look at now. I miss Cooper from the 70's and 80'sπŸ‘πŸ₯…πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ’πŸ˜Ž
  15. Have walked this path...we are in betweeners...no way around it. If I don't wear suspenders with the QRLs...I have to keep pulling them up. CCM med...waaaaay too small...large...fits. I like the Warriors so much better that I just suck it up and use suspenders. It's worthwhile for me as the padding in the hip is significantly better...I have two new hips...I'll wear suspenders...small price. Cannot speak to the CCM with X-Padding designation.
  16. With regard to fit...I have a 34" waist and I also find Warrior medium a bit loose. I like everything else about the fit (and the pants) so I use suspenders. The CCM HP45...I wear a large and that fits more snug than the large CCM's. I don't know if other models of either brand fit the same way.
  17. Many! I got Warrior Dynasty's just cuz they were $30 on clearance. Substantial so they'll last...no padding...just a belt to keep them up.
  18. The shell is your best friend πŸ‘πŸ˜Ž I'm on one team with Islanders colors but have one black and one red shell for my other teams. Cheap and work great...don't even realize I've got them on.
  19. Not sure about the X v C designation. I agree...pro stock pants and gloves are beyond superior and often less expensive. Can't figure that out, but... Be aware...ProStock.com states on there site...NO RETURNS. Maybe verify with them. I got mine from Hockey Monkey, but get sticks from PS. Both have great customer service.
  20. I'm not familiar with that Warrior line, but sounds like a good choice if it's trad-fit. I don't have experience with the HP70, but the 45 is the tapered version, so maybe the 70 for you? Still...coming from Cooper Islander pro pants (circa 1976)...the Warriors have that level of protection (no mean feat) with less weight. The extra padding HP...can't speak to that. Maybe go retail rather than Pro Stock.com so you can try on and return. Hockey Monkey will let you return pro stock items for credit. Good luck!
  21. I'm going to suggest that you consider the Warrior Covert QRL. I have these as well as the HP45. The CCM is more snug but also shorter (even unzipped), but the protection of the Warrior is superior as the cost of a little more weight. This is especially noticable in the outer thigh and hamstring areas. I'm 5'9", 170, 34" and I wear M Warriors and L CCM. Still need suspenders for the Warrior, it's it. IMHO.
  22. I found a pair of Warrior QRL Pro Stock at Hockeymonkey...gonna give them a shot. Warrior might be better for my physique with a short torso.
  23. Just to update...the Warrior Covert QRL pro stocks are just about perfect for me. Might even be a tiny bit big, but they are built insanely well and are super comfortable. Not ultralight, but with this much protection and durability...not sure how they could be lighter. Anyway, thanks to all who provided insight!
  24. I found a pair of Warrior QRL Pro Stock at Hockeymonkey...gonna give them a shot. Warrior might be better for my physique with a short torso.
  25. Thanks so much...that is awesome info. Any idea if the Warrior Tapered style would be a better fit? I'm tempted to give the UCLP a try. I used to (actually still do) wear a pair of Cooper pro Isles pants in medium, and they were snug but they fit. I'm trying not to get "tank" pants but if that's the way it's gotta be...
