  1. Cool to see you're trying a different angle for the top 3 eyelets. How did you arrive at those values (8, 6, and 4 mm) forward from normal? Did you consider having the heel more aggressively pitched forward as well? What do you mean full foam on the inside of the tendon guard? Is it the original VH tendon guard, or the new one with added foam for padding? Can't wait to get your impressions of the boots with the requests that you made.
  2. These also look like 2000s, and possibly still 322's because I imagine 306 would look really short on his boots, but the size is really only a guess.
  3. Kulikov also had CXN's on his VH, but I don't think he had a Mako transition period before that setup. Along with Pirri, Quinten Howden wears them. I was wondering if Bjugstad might make the switch. Now let's see how long it lasts.
  4. I think I get it. Practice can be intense, but it's also always so known. Games are less so (maybe that's not really the case as much for a veteran like Steen, but that's beyond my ability/experience to imagine), and that degree of uncertainty requires more cognitive resources which makes the demand for the utmost automatic response/reaction all the more intense. If your equipment doesn't do what you expect it to do, it could much more readily show up in a game situation than in a practice or even a number of practices. I think quite a few guys are just so used to a Bauer-like boot that they are more relaxed and automatic performing in it, even if it might be less comfortable, less responsive, etc.
  5. Went back to Bauer already.
  6. Kulikov had it on some of his pairs. Maybe it just went unnoticed.
  7. Which VH tongue are you using? Is it the standard looking one with felt beyond the edge of the leather middle? For the thinner tongues, are they the slim ones seen in this video?
  8. Maybe see a physical therapist? That might be overkill, but what if you're bending your knees more or something when wearing the VH and that's what's causing the strain? Maybe some exercises for building up knee strength could help. You could check to see if your skating is different with a friend catching video of you in your VH vs your other skates. That's just a guess, but I had similar knee soreness when I was starting out in cross-country in high school. Our coach always checked new runners for strain there and had us do some really light weight reps on the leg curling machine. We weren't supposed to do a full curl, only from legs extended fully straight, down a few degrees (10-15 max.) and then back up to extended. I did that a few times and the soreness went away and never came back.
  9. Isn't it both? I thought the Cobra/Ultra pitch is more aggressive than most holders other than the CXN.
  10. Wideman had an endorsement deal with Graf. After that, I don't think he had one with Bauer. Kulikov seemed like he was in the works on one with Easton at one point. He had Easton cuff rolls on Covert gloves and wore Makos instead of VH, but that didn't last long. This is from New Year's Eve, 2014:
  11. Wilson's the only one I know of who went from VH to Mako, and not the other way around. Kulikov had Makos for a minute too. It'll be interesting if Bauer comes out with a direct competitor to the VH/Mako in a few years or so. I can't really decide if I see that happening or not.
  12. Seems that may have been short-lived. Giordano and Kulikov both Bauer reverts.
  13. I think this is the right link: http://www.vhhockey.com/dealers/
  14. I keep wondering if they'll do as Mission did by offering two different lines for two different buyers: 1. Synergy as a more traditional skate to compete with Bauer ski boot stiffness, cut, and classic RazorBladz holder. 2. Stealth on CXN's as a Mako 3 with a slightly more aggressive cut to compete more directly with VH. That could be very interesting. The manufacturing of the Makos seems to bring them back to the same area as the original Synergy models, and though the Makos have had some defects and manufacturing weaknesses, their durability still seems to have faired better with everyday use. Perhaps now they could use their new improved manufacturing and apply it to the old concept and have two complimentary options.
  15. Yeah, I don't really like the look either. I love the way it feels though.
  16. I found flopping the tongue in my MLX really improved the feeling of independent movement of the boot/foot from the leg/shin, which I really liked. The thermoplastic in the tongue helped mold it in a flopped position. It was just a little short and left a bit too much ankle poking out for my liking so I molded it back to be more upright again. I liked the flopped feeling enough that I decided that if I were getting VH I would go for a tongue option that would allow flop: either the original thinner VH tongue (which it looks like Byfuglien has on his boots) with a little more length to allow a slightly higher flop or the thicker felt one with some thermoplastic to help mold it flopped. Because the thermoplastics work so well in the skate, it's possible to get full wrap from top to bottom and still flop to get the tongue out of the way of the shin. That's essential for me because I really like to get deep ankle rotation on normal strides and with tucking the tongue or letting it rest tightly against the shin, it feels as though I'm steering against the skate. Edit: forgot to add the thing about Byfuglien's thinner tongues.
  17. Right on both counts. He was in Napor 7000s last year and Graf G9035's his draft year, while Claude was trying to run the ship. I could never take Claude seriously in that role. I don't think he ever wore Graf as a player. Brendan's got smooth wheels. Happy to see he's in VH, where they're better suited.
  18. Editing suggestion: wise ape, not idiot. If something is difficult, we use tools, and not only that (because other animals can do that too), but we use refined tools. If it's the best boot for your foot, and you have to use a shoe horn, so use a shoe horn. A few seconds of standing out of the crowd is worth an hour+ of being able to do your thing comfortably.
  19. I like the logo. I can see why some don't though. I think they could sharpen the perception of their skates by trying to make the individual pieces overlap more seamlessly, but that's not as big of a deal for me as how the skate fits and functions. I just know not everyone thinks the same way.
  20. A lot of the KHL guys have the VH logo on theirs. They've probably had them for a while though, at least a few months or so. I wonder what the threshold for VH might be for them to pay the NHL licensing fee and have their logo displayed.
  21. I've been wondering why they don't just stitch the velcro into the toe cap, now that the carbon cup doesn't go all the way to the top of the toe box anymore. The more they can streamline those details, the less people will be turned off by the look, in my mind. Plus, less screws to lose, have go rusty, etc.
  22. Yeah, Wideman was in Bauer for quite some time.
