Lets see if I can figure out how to upload a pic...LOL Ok so much for that...I guess I will have to use the link to a pretty awesome pair of skates I just finished!! If your into the whole RedbullCrashedIce Craze.... https://www.facebook.com/ProSkateCorner/photos/a.182247761921842.62567.177972529016032/562271273919487/?type=1&theater

There is one large issue. There is not a helmet on the market that will ever protect against a concussion. Period. That is impossible. It would be nice if a helmet were able to possibly reduce impact but again seeing as MOST hockey related concussions are rotational impacts that is highly unlikely. Not for a second am I saying that it needs to be stopped in the search for one but lets not be foolish thinking a helmet will prevent or deter from getting one. As for the VA study and hockey all companies related to hockey think the testing they are doing (as they tried to duplicate it) is a bunch of BS. It has no bearing on how the game is played nor are the hits in his testing related to hockey hits. As per the testing as it is now not one helmet would pass the VA testing....not one!

Blackstone Flat-Bottom V Thread

Hey I am not saying it wouldn't happen, I have done skates for guys. But I was also informed in a couple cases that the trainer put them back the way he wanted them regardless of what had been done and how much the player liked them. Ces la vie ( I think thats how its goes?)...LOL I know of Cooke doing that as well but that was during the lockout. If guys do their own that is different. I know of a 3 time stanley cup champion that brought a guy to his hotel room to do skates during his last cup run. Owner found out and made him bring the guy in and ended up paying his as a "consultant". The guy even ended up getting a ring after they won. And he did about 3 or 4 guys skates on the team because they were not happy with the main guy. But these are all few and far between. Most show trainers will do what the guy asks for. If they don't and the player is a high profile guy he won't have a job very long. As far as FBV goes I was one of the first on it after Cory Stillman in Florida and before you guys got to try it in I think it was Detroit that year. I personally really like it however not really skating anymore due to concussions I have not been able to try some of the newer cuts. I think I am going to try and get back on the ice soon even if just for some stick and puck. (Helmet Strap nice and tight)! -

Although I agree with the first part that most teams have the ability to do it as some players like it and have come from teams that use it. I know that the Islanders most guys use it there just because of working with some of the players. Now your second part I highly doubt unless it is this same team, (as just mentioned) as Doug Weights father does some skates for those guys and the trainers know him. I doubt any players are having blades shipped out for sharpening to many legal issues unless the trainer is doing it himself shipping to get that done. -

I was curious and looked it up for here to confirm. You could start in a pro shop at 14 but can't shapren till you 15. However you can work on a farm at any age. (even more so of course if it is family). Sorry for going off topic but thought it is interesting. Maybe its own thread? -

Flat spots or shiny spots when it has been pressed too hard against the grinding wheel. -

Is that just in the US? As it is not the case here in Canada? Would that also go for working on a farm? (Kind of curious and sorry off topic.) -
You are incorrect. That is just part of the whole process. It involves materials being used it involves testing methods in it involves so many different aspects. Including now coming up with a science based testing method working with the makers that will test for rotational impact. It just evolves slower due to the funding. But it is being done.

Ok first off I was reading and replying after flying home from Australia on the 21 hour flight. So I think my meanings have come out a little bit wrong here. I will get my head back together and reply with much better information that actually makes sense........ (Will be very curious to see what VT comes up with - an industry outsider without ulterior motives - looking in.) CSA and HECC being non profit there are no ulterior motives. I may have been a little off in my comments and will take the criticism but to say there are motives on the CSA and HECC board is actually offensive!
-
I think you may forget being on the CSA board I have dealt with this school and there testing for over 3 years now. And everyone at the table agrees that with the present tests they are using they will not do anything to forward the helmets as they are. Instead of creating a "New": testing system they should be looking at if there is anything to reduce the chances of a concussion. If that was the work being done first then all the power. But the fact is they got a ton of cash to "research testing" when in fact all it is a more glorified testing system that only says more precisely the weakness of the different helmets are. Look at the funding this school has compared to The Brain Institute in Boston at BU. ! Sorry but sitting there saying this is wrong thats wrong isn't improving the helmets or anything else it just shows possible weakness!
-
( I think the cushioning aspect is much more applicable than the current impact dispersion testing.) Thats great in therory but the speed of the game will not allow for a helmet to reduce the chance of concussion! Not in the game of hockey anyway. Way to many variables. Is it a bad idea no. But in his discussions he says that the current system and people involved are doing nothing and his system is the only way. to that I say BS!!!

Putting larger holders on skates (?)
oldtrainerguy28 replied to bogeywhite's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
Going to have to disagree with you on this. Mainly for the women in hockey (or guys with smaller feet such as my son). There was a very large improvement with both ladies on my team last year. They were both decent skaters. But one had gone from a 6.5 to a 5.5 and the other from a 5.5 to a 4 in skate size. Both were used to the longer blade on the boots they were in although they didnt fit. After finding the best holder size for both they both maintained the speed they had with the old skates but were much more maneuverable. (Both Players were on Team Canada Captain and Asst) In my son's case it just made him much more sturdy at 4'10" and 100lbs at 10 years old in a 1.5 skate and regular 212 holder. When he went to a 2.5 I went to a 230 and he doesn't fall near as much with a stock radius on step. The one I did the largest change was for a US National Team player that was 5'0" and 140 wearing a 1.5 skate. She was ranked 4th fastet on the team at the time and US beat Canada that year in the Worlds. She wore a 230 Tuuk old style on the 1.5. My experiences. -
Luckily I have a few more days till I start class again. First time in 20 something years. Although doing it online from the shop so shouldn't be to hard. And wasn't that expensive. Luckily the shop is heated well for this -30 plus weather. Better then out west at -50 in Winterpeg!
-
Deal with this all the time. Only once did we let the younger player up and realized after even though she was very mature the language and topics discussed in the dressing room (although I am sure u14 is not near as bad as being 12 on a U19 team) Still the comparison would be similar. I would have to put the foot down on this. It would be difficult for both but if its for more then a one time event then no the 10 year old will have to wait. That being said if it's for more then one game then no. Sorry. Just my 2 cents. (many years in girls hockey!)
-
well then in your theory Max edge and others that have a "glide" enhancer to them would be illegal?
-
Used it for a year. Just found it to expensive to use all the time. I was told it felt better and when I used it I could feel a little more glide but I let the players tell me as they are ont he ice more than I am. I know talking to Edmonton trainer RNH still uses it all the time.

Blade Alignment to help Pronation when skating
oldtrainerguy28 replied to BlackIce's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
Seeing as I do not sell skates anymore I am happy to assist in a fitting for people in the GTA. I can offer fitting advice and a possible shop in your area to try on some different models. So far things have worked very well for those getting their new skates! -
The "revolutionary" channel Z skate sharpening by Prosharp
oldtrainerguy28 replied to Ivan's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
The testing initially was done here in Toronto for it and there was marginal differences in the speed and such. the guys that did like it and had it switched to them was like its ok but not like they had to have it. I think the main issue with it in the testing was that they put everyone on 7-13 and the ZC and expected guys to just take to it. as mentioned before in another spot even the owner agreed that was probably not the best idea as the gues were used to a shorter combo radius. So if that was done with the ZC they actually may have noticed a larger difference and in one players case they would have had to get it as he was a star player on that team. I always believe when there is an issue you have to see that person skate check all the variables there is no magic fix and no one profile or sharpen that works for everyone. I have my go to profiles and hollows i start with and go from there. As one player stated today to me " I am going back to what got me here. I am getting X skate from the store going with it because it feels good I was trying to out think myself in sticks and skates, so were starting from scratch and I will drop them off to you wed." a good tough AHL player that had a decent season last year but was trying to over tweek everything. Starting wed he will be back to pretty much stock everything curve and skates and do minor tweeks until it feels good again. Sorry was closing up and was on a role there. I shouldn't post late at night..........lol -
The "revolutionary" channel Z skate sharpening by Prosharp
oldtrainerguy28 replied to Ivan's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
I have been working with it for 3 years IMO there are some benefits as mentioned for some and there is a study being done this year vs FBV and ROH sharpening when that is complete and there is proof that it actually offers a larger than 5% increase in speed then I will jump on the bandwagon. I would never deter a player from getting it as long as they use the profile they are used to and we figure out the hollow they are most comfortable with using the channel. As of right now I have one player using it (here dad is an investor in the company so......) others have tried and didn't really feel the difference. NHL players that had it done while skating in Toronto had the blades removed last season at camp as the trainers involved did not want to deal with more products. That being said some are now using Pro Sharp machines to do the Profiles to save themselves time so we will see as mentioned how it goes. I will just sit and wait before investing in my own machine as I have access to Pro Sharp and ZC blades from the supplier here.
