I tried the XLR8 one and had to take them up on the 100% satifaction guarantee as the thing was so big and bulky I couldn't breathe.

I then went to a Shock Doctor and found it much better, but I couldn't talk well and it could come out fairly easily.

Finally, I learned my work plan would cover a customized mouth guard that my Dentist could mould me for. Normally it would have cost $300 (CDN) but I didn't pay a penny. Yeah!

Obviously the custom one is best, but if I ever lost it I'd go back to the Shock Doc.

I've used both and the XLR8 is a little longer and offers better concussion protection than the top end Shock Doc. Most kids tend to like the low end shock doctor as they try to get away with as little protection as possible or just end up chewing on them.

I love my XLR8 mouthguard although I have a small mouth like eagle, but I got around it by cutting the edges a little at the back with a blade. It moulded to my mouth way better than shock docters do although XLR8's do seem a little awkward at the start........but you get used to it. Anyway I have bought 2 now and they even stick to the roof of my mouth nicely and seem less bulky than shock docters.

ive heard shockdoctors come with an insurance .. is that true ?

That's if you break your teeth while wearing their product I think. I have the $15 shock doctor (the white/black one that doesn't come with a case.) I tried to use the mouth guard but after two games I gave up because I just couldn't get used to it. I boiled it the first time and tried boiling it again after the two games and I just didn't like the feel of a mouthguard.

the XLR8 is one of the most protective mouthguards on the market. you can go to their site, xlr8yourgame.com for more info. What I like about it is it is difficult to chew the hard outer layer. You can buy a SD for your kid, but if he/she is a chewer, you'll basically loose all protection fairly quick. Kids tend to give up trying to chew the XLR8.

The higher end SD models offer good protection, they are not a bad choice, but my pref would be xlr8's
