tape-O vs. renfro

Recommended Posts

Andover is bad tape.  It wears through too easy on the bottom of the blade.  Sportstape did that to me as well.  Renfrew though is the worst overall tape.  The only tape that I have found not to wear through on the bottom is Jaybird.  There is no tape ever that can beat Jaybird.  It is by far the best.

I had customers stop buying tape from me when I had Jaybird. The samples they sent me were fine, the stuff I was sent for my order was garbage. The tape actually started unraveling while sitting in the display case. It wouldn't even stick to itself.

You could see throught the Jaybird, just like the tape-o I had, even the black.

Honestly Jimmy, if you have a bunch of rec. players in your area that dont really care about their tape as long it stays on the stick, I would keep at what your selling....If you have people that come in and complain about the tape, I would consider changing then

True, but I'm always looking at ways to reduce costs and increase profit without raising prices. So if I can find a better product and offer it to the customer, that's what I try to do.

Sportstape was ok, but they quoted us one price and charged us 13 cents more a roll, plus we got killed with shipping charges. I won't touch them ever again after doing that to us.

Yea shipping is a killer on tape. I'm looking at Comp o- stik, they offer free shipping for 10 case plus orders. I got a nice explanation yesterday from their sales guy as to why they believe their tape is worth the extra cost. I'll probably try one order and see how it flies with the customers.

Just make you store it correctly. It will take a while for you to go through 81 rolls, so you don't want it to go bad from the weather.

I'm thinking about ordering a case of White Comp-O-Stick tape because I usually re tape after every ice time, which equates to 7 or 8 times a week..

I buy in 6 packs usually, but regardless I think it would be pretty sweet to have that much tape ;)

I got a case of Comp-O-Stik with half white half black, as I use black on the blade and white on the handle.

Then I got 45 rolls of white grip tape for the handle.

It was all for a pretty good deal. I'll never use any other brand for tape again...

As with many others, I use Renfrew only because its what the stores carry and you can get a good deal at Costco for a 12 pack.

It's worth the extra cost to me as well but a lot of my customers will pay 50 cents less to get a smaller roll of Renfrew from PIAS around the corner.

I haven't seen Renfrew tape at Costco here in Calgary.

The only hockey tape they have that I've seen is "R-brand" which sounds like a cheapo Renfrew rip off.

We carried Renfrew for 2 years. The adhesive began to fall off the cloth and we had to look for new brands as we were giving away tons of tape to customers to make up for it. I've been very happy with Sportstape - it's tight off the roll and the cloth is softer - it rips widthwise but damn near impossible to rip lengthwise. I had to keep some rolls of Renfrew around so I can tape my handle (I use a 1/8" knob)

Comp-O is by far the strongest tape out there. I did not like the feel however, the puck bounced off it - kinda like I was playing with no tape.

i just use any black hockey tape to tape my blade ,and white cloth on the handle. i can get through a whole icetime without having to tape because i use wax so i just tape my stick every ice time.

The only place in my town that carries Renfrew is Players Bench and Costco.

Yeah, the only problem I've ever had with Jaybird was the adhesive. My case doesn't stick too well to itself either. However, putting wax on the end where you rip it off solves that problem very easily. I've never had it start unraveling while on the roll. Tyler33 also has a case of Jaybird, but his is much better. I used a roll of his and it did not have the problem I had. So it seems like that problem is not always there. Other than the adhesive, Jaybird lasts about 4 times longer than any other tape I've tried.

I'm not too picky about tape either but I've had a few rolls of renfrew where I never even made it to the end because the adhesive fell off or for some reason I can't explain there is white stitching holding two end pieces together on my roll and that kills the entire roll it doesn't unroll properly after hitting the white stitching and the adhesive comes off.

The worst tape I ever used was Andover. I worked at a shop for a couple years that carried Andover tape, and I always had trouble getting more than 1 icetime out of a tape job. There were times I even had to retape my blade (or switch sticks) halfway through a game.

I also worked in a shop that carried Renfrew, and I never had any issues with their tape... but I haven't worked there, or used Renfrew tape, in quite a few years.

I repped for Jaybird for 3 years and never received one complaint about the quality of their tape. My brother currently reps Jaybird. Also, the shop I work in now has carried Jaybird for at least 3 years, and the only problems we've ever had are with colored tape that had been sitting on our shelves for too long.

I worked in a shop that carried Tape-O. Not bad, I got a couple complaints, but nothing I was too worried about. However, their tape is NOT 1" wide, it's only 7/8", and costs more than most companies' 1" tape.

I have also tried Comp-O-Stick, the quality seemed pretty good, but it was very sticky on the sides (hard to pull the rolls apart if they're stacked up).

That's a "splice". Probably should not have ended up in a regular case of tape. Most companies will sell spliced rolls at a discount, or in prepacks, but not mixed in with regular rolls.
