Playing with lace bite

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if you guys have any tips for playing with very painful lace bite. I took 10 days off my skates & went back out yesterday and it's back with a vengeance. Today I'm supposed to be on the ice 4 hours and I can barely put my skates on without major pain. Help!

Other than gel pads and/or replacing your skates there isn't much you can do.

That's what I figured. :(

Any suggestions on a skate with good lace bite prevention? I'm in 10.5 EE Mission S400's now.

In addition to the lace bite I've also grown a little knob above my left ankle bone. I guess the low cut boots aren't for me. Shame, I really like them otherwise.

If a retailer near you gets the Kor skates you may want to give them a shot. The tongue is pretty solid and that will help prevent lace bite. the nice part is they are able to be heat formed so the tongue actually fits your foot as well.

Im pretty sure that you have calcium deposits. Im not too up on them, but my dad gets the same thing and they haven't gone away.

EDIT: I asked my dad, and he said that he uses these

Dr. Scholls has this stuff called moleskin. you stick it on your feet (like a bandage), and it stops things from rubbing against the skin. Works great for hiking, should work on skate bite.

As far as the heel bump, it is called Haglunds deformity and has been discussed before on this site. Try searching back 3-5 months.

Thanks for the replys guys. I ended up unlacing the top two eyelets and tying the bottom really tight to prevent slipping. It really relieved alot of the pain. It was a little shaky on the hard turns but at least I know I can play with it. Heck, it'll probably strengthen my ankles if I keep it up. B)

i had the same problem as well for a bit but i ended up getting gel pads... if you want to go cheap go find some really soft soxs and tape them up, they are ok but sometimes it can get a little thick... you best bet is to use gel pads. when it comes to a skate with good lace bite protection i would have to say the high end CCM's are really good.

Or anything w/ the tongue found on Vapors..........haha which are the Vapors and 8090's.

I think JR said the 8090 used the best features of various skates and the tongue was taken from the Vapor line.

My pain is on the top front part of my outside ankle. Actually, it's where my skate eyelets are. Does this sound like lace bite?

I also wonder if this is a symptom of my skates being too shallow.

Any thoughts?

If the variety of lace bite you are experiencing is focused pain in the tendons that transition from the bridge of your foot to your ankle, I have a suggestion. After trying several inserts including the gel pads, I had the best results with a home made 3" x 4" rectangle of 1/8" - 3/16" thick silicone foam rubber (weather stripping material). I'm sure something with similar material properties like a neoprene mouse pad would work equally well. Good luck.

I have been having the same problem with my 652's and did the same thing. Took an old mouse pad and cut four pieces about 1.5" wide and 3" long. On two of them I cut out a small square on one end so the little bump on my ankle fits in it, and then put the one that I didn't cut over that one. So what I have is a double layer except for the cut out portion over mt ankle bone which is single layer. Then I put them width wise over the top of my foot and under my socks. Pretty cheap way to go, and it has helped.

Hope this made sense to those reading.

These are good tips guys, thanks. Right now I'm taking a week off the skates, applying lots of ice and popping the Advil to get the swelling down. After that I'll go to a stick a puck with a few prosthesis' to see what works.

When all is said and done though, I wonder if this is one big exercise of treating the symptoms and not the cause. But I can't imagine opening up the whole new skate can of worms.

Cheers,

JJ

all i have to say is thank god for graf tongues....

Really? With the exception of the Vector pros, almost all cases of lace bite I've seen were on grafs.

I had to transplant some Bauer 2-piece tongues onto my Graf 703 skates to alleviate lace bite.
