Chadd

Shame if this is true

the word "hero" is thrown around all too often anymore, but that man and his brother are true heros. first to turn down the rams' money to stay in arizona, then to leave even the smaller contract to defend his country. even if you don't agree with america's ways of doing things, you gotta support our guys over there getting ambushed day after day.

The Cardinals needs all the money they can get... I doubt they'll name their new field after him. Are they even getting a new field? They've been trying to for years.

Yes, they are building a new field in Glendale.

If they can get it past the FAA, I remember they had a problem with planes landing in the airport having problems with the stadium.

That's what I read a few years ago. It was designed too tall to be that close to the airfield.

I was shocked to see that headline when I got home from school today. He, as Jim Rome would say, is a trooper. A damn fine man.

Truly a shame, the guys actions definitely define character and bravery. However, let's not forget all the other people who have remained nameless because they weren't high profile people before they went over. All heroes in my book.

Buried in his rantings are some interesting points that merit discussion, but not on a hockey website. The problem is his tone and assumptions are enough to turn anyone off to his article, even those that may agree with him. I think it's interesting to see what people say about anyone who strays from popular opinion, shows a lot about the makeup of people.

It's sad that the dude died, and I feel bad that he lost his life.

Just goes to show you how different ppl's opinion of the matter is swayed by their upbringing. The author pointed out that he didn't come from a well-to-do family, so walking away from a multi million dollar contract would seem ridiculous.

Also I like the point he brought out, when he said Tillman wasn't fighting to keep a foreign invader off the east coast.

I thought it was an excellent piece.

Well, I've given my 2 cents worth on this one. Posted to the papers website.

Mr. Gonzalez, I find it hard to believe that there are people who can hold the opinions that you expressed in your article. However, when you show an ignorance for facts and general knowledge like you displayed in this column it all starts to make sense.

"For people in the United States, who seem to be unable to admit the stupidity of both the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars, such a trade-off in life standards (if not expectancy) is nothing short of heroic.......He wasn't defending me"

In case you missed it, Al Qaeda struck first at the United States. You might not have noticed but a couple of years ago there used to be a couple of really tall buildings in New York City that are not there anymore. And somebody put a really big hole in the Pentagon. The people who did this were members of Al Qaeda. A group that is supported by the Taliban which was the ruling faction of Afghanistan and a group that promised more acts of terrorism against the United States. Mr. Gonzalez, Pat Tillman was indeed defending you, unless you forgot that the University of Massachusetts is in fact within the borders of the United States.

"However, in my neighborhood in Puerto Rico, Tillman would have been called a "pendejo," an idiot. Tillman, in the absurd belief that he was defending or serving his all-powerful country from a seventh-rate, Third World nation devastated by the previous conflicts it had endured, decided to give up a comfortable life to place himself in a combat situation that cost him his life. This was not "Ramon or Tyrone," who joined the military out of financial necessity, or to have a chance at education. This was a "G.I. Joe" guy who got what was coming to him. That was not heroism, it was prophetic idiocy."

Apparently, in your neighborhood people don't believe in duty and honor. While many take the path of the military in order to further their education, there are many more who do so because they believe in the ideals of this country and want to be a part of the group that protects those same ideals. However, you would deride these people for believing in such things as freedom, liberty, duty, honor, and sacrifice.

Mr. Gonzalez, I guess you will take pride in the amount of attention that this column has received. However, you have not made yourself famous, but infamous. I am guessing that few employers will want to look at the resume of Rene Gonzalez after yesterday. As I write this people are cursing your name from coast to coast. Some are probably even wishing you bodily harm and others are wishing that they could be the ones to carry it out. You must also realize that you have brought shame and embarrassment on your publication, your school, and your family name.

In closing, Mr. Gonzalez, I'll say good luck, because after yesterday, you're going to need it.

His journalism skills are weak for a grad student.

That isn't the point of an OpEd piece. Hell, if you write in pig latin and it gets your point across then it served it's purpose.

Well, this is the miscellaneous discussions part of the forum which I believe is exactly for these types of threads. And while people will debate the Iraqi war, I find it hard to believe that anyone can quarrel with the exercise in Afghanistan and routing out the Taliban and Al Qaeda who both have promised further acts of violence against the United States.
