Automated skate sharpening/ profiling

BTW

My Dad was the original seed investor w/Bobby hull and Ted Green of this unit called the Universal Skate Sharpener back in the mid 70's

the guy's name was Lionel Conn, which was later changed to Lionel Conn Job.

big coin-operated hulking machine that tried to make a comeback in the 80's.

You mean to say that it lives somwhere?

I used to sharpen when i had pratice at 7h a,m when i was 10yr old...

1. This sharpenner sharpen at super-razor cut

2.the edge last like 2-3hours

3. I had one of my friend's skate got stuck in the machine we couldn"t have play the game!

4. I had one time my lace fuck up because of the machine...

5.The price is kinda the same as a pro-shop

CONCLUSION: Go take your skate to the pro-shop the night before the game or pratice!

I dont think i would trust a machine thats run like that with my skates. I'd rather have a person do them.

We have one in our arena here at Queen's University. One day I was going to play a game and saw a team mate feeding his Graf's into this machine. I said to him, "you're not gonna put your skates in that thing are you?". His reply: "ya .. why?". Sigh.

whoops - just saw the picture that was posted. That's not what we have. We have the big vending machine unit.

That looks the thing they have at my local Crappy Tire (a non-pro shop equipt Canadian Tire).

Gotta use my quote again -

There's a certain element of human finesse needed to sharpen skates. The CAG ONE is great for radiusing - set it and forget it. I wouldn't use it as my main sharpener however.

I think Jimmy can shed some light on the CAG ONE as he uses it for his radiusing.

We're in agreement on this one. Great for radius work, not for individual sharpenings. It's an art as much as science.

I'll agree with the above posts. They have one at the local rink and I had my first Pure Fly's profiled on it. It was fine but the edges weren't that great.

the cag one isnt that great for radiusing since the computer isnt as accurate as a person with a ruler measuring the toe and heel center of the skate and if they arent the same on either skate they are then. we used to use the cag one and we find the blademaster profiling/maximum edge profiling since theres measurements taken before the profiling during and after to make sure both skates are even height

Yes, I have a modified CAG Profiler I use for radiusing which works great. It does an OK job on sharpening, but not great. Leaves rough finish at toe/heel. I don't use it for sharpening.

I actually like the CAG much better for radiusing than my old template grinder, it does a more accurate cut. The computer measures the blade, then cuts in the radius you select. What is really nice about it is you don't crossgrind and waste steel, it simply cuts in the radius at the same hollow that is on the skate.

I will say it is a maintenence nightmare if anyone is thinking of getting one, take off the lid and you will see two circiut boards, CPU board, 3 motors, 5 belts, levers, relay switches and gobs of wiring. A lot of things that can fail, especially in a dusty environment. I run a calibration test every day just to make sure its perfect.

I have a 'Profiler' as well, been in use for 7 years now and working great. . . . (environment = super dusty which has already killed my cellphone 3 times) Now with the self-centering holder and the BS spinner system, the 2 big drawbacks have been resolved. Dressing and blade thickness was always a bit of an issue with me before. Works great for what it was designed to do - Radiusing or Profiling. Sharpens up those bottom shelf skates with the crap steel very well without the added frustration which always seems to accompany them on the bench grinder ?

It's either the Carelton Place or Richmond arena (in Ontario) which has something like this.

I'm actually designig/developing/building an automated skate sharpener for one of my classes this semester. I'll post some pics of the design drawings, and a link to the video once we have it completed.

That might be a good idea with the technology we have available today. If you were to smarten the computer so that it is 100% accurate every time you could have something there. The machines pictured are a bit outdated and seem to lack technology.
