Is that something they do for him (Dallman) by putting "Dolemite" on the shaft? Or is it what Warrior is putting on the shafts anyway? I know they have funky names for their sticks like Mac Daddy or Big Daddy.

BNH has excellent customer service. This is one of the main reasons that BNH "gets it."

I had a customer come in with Vapor XIX that he got at another shop but brought to me for sharpening. I looked at the steel and it was 10 degrees off vertical and showed him the problem. The other shop sent the skates back and BNH customer service told him that he was wrong and didn't know what he was talking about. They also told him that they would put custom+ on the skate, because he just wasn't used to LS and that would solve his problem. He came in and told me the story a day or so later and told me it was the last time he buys a Bauer product.

I like some of the BNH people but they have some problems that really need to be solved right now.

When it comes to problems, BNH has far fewer than anybody else in this business.

Perhaps we should start another thread so we don't get all the Warrior ga-ga guys upset reading about our problems inside the industry.

Actually, the quality control has been very bad on the skates I've seen around here. Far worse than CCM, RBK, Mission, etc...

They must ship all the seconds to Pa because all mine are OK!

Actually some of them came from Pure Hockey and either Giant or Monkey as well.

Which models in particular? Top of the line, mid line? What problems specifically do you see? Did you think of putting in a shim to correct the player's skate? Which model was this problem on with the 10* tilt? Just curious...

In this particular case, it was XIX or XX, I don't recall as it was a couple weeks ago.

I've seen the problem on 8090, 6000, XXX, XX, XIX, XV and the VIII or whatever the $99 model is. On a lot of them the steel is mounted well off of vertical. Since I didn't sell them I suggest they return them to the retailer that sold them and have them fix the problem or replace the skates if repair isn't possible. That's what I would do for my customers if our skates had those problems. The retailers always seem to send them back and not deal with trying to repair them.

I'm not talking about skates that have been used for 6 months, I'm talking about brand new skates. A dealer shouldn't have to fix brand new skates, especially $400+ skates. I can see it on $100 skates, not that I find that acceptable either, but I can at least understand why they would cut corners on a cheap skate.

So lets agree that all the companies have problems. You just have to pick your poison. BNH has quality control issues for some dealers, THC has shipping problems for some dealers, and Easton has inventory issues for some dealers.

Oh I agree with you, all have big problems because they feel like it is a privilage for us to sell their equipment. No other industry has this one-sided view. So what can we retailers do about it, absolutely nothing. We complain to closed ears.

I will say it's a good opportunity for smaller companies with great customer service to fill the void. Salming, etc.

I have no problem dumping companies or not stocking certain products that are inferior. The customer never takes it out on "Bauer" or "Easton", it's always US because they think we sold them the crap. Ever since I've tapered off my easton stick inventory, customers have been happier with durability.

And I agree with you, Jimmy. The Big 3 supplying the industry is a bit like dealing with the Detroit motor industry. At the moment, these are our choices and the "brands" the customers want. Before I go further, I invite any Big 3 lurkers to lace up their skates and add their thoughts to this thread, if they so desire. For a bit of history in the business, only 15 years ago there were as many as ten other solid brands to choose from as a buyer. The shrinkage of the industry began with Canstar and was duplicated when Jofa, Koho, and Canadien merged. This happened in the early 90's. The CSGA show in Montreal used to be a buyer's dream with all the different vendors offering a lot of quality equipment. This has all changed, obviously, and now the gap from the Big 3 is widening quickly. Jimmy is right that a quality smaller firm could do very well is true. However, thinking "big picture", it is a staggering start-up for dollars and logistics. The good old days of quality equipment from strong second level vendors like Louisville, Vic, Canadien, Christian, Branches, Daoust, Micron(to name a few) are long gone.

I also feel that the constant turnover in this industry leads to the same problems happening again and again. This business is very much a tight group(please read between the lines) that seems to recycle the same players over and over. Unfortunately, the really good ones(few and far between) also get caught up because sooner or later, they all do. My point being everyone seems to join the club of being shown the door, no matter how well they do. Its is almost like the ultimate initiation into the hockey industry. It is amazing to watch it happen year after year.

I agree with being a selective buyer and ignoring inferior products. The idea is to make money, not throw it away. Just because some marketing guy thought "this" would be a good idea doesn't mean I can sell it in my shop. When dealing with the reps, you have to remember business is business and friends are friends and don't ever use the two in the same sentence.

this is what we call an oligopoly, and they control the industry. waht are you going to do? you cant do anythign but complain, as they have 100% of the power over your businesses

Not exactly 100%. Oligopoly is one company, no choice. We can still refuse to purchase from any of the Big 3 and still get product from the other two. The products do become so similar that you can survive without having all three. Just ask Jimmy.
