A-Rod's being selective in this complaint, because the White Sox started Buerhle and Garland on Friday and Saturday, even though they had already clinched. Obviously, they would have rather pitched those guys a couple of innings so they'd be able to use them in Games 1 and 2. However, they maintained the "code of honor" that A-Rod mentions and that actually helped the Yankees win the AL East. If the White Sox had pitched two September call ups, and the Indians took two of three, there would have been a three-way tie between the Yanks, Red Sox and Indians, and the Yanks would be playing the Sox today for the division.

By the way, I don't know who came up with this, but the best line I ever read about A-Rod slapping the ball was someone said A-Rod slapped the ball with his Hamburger Helper gloves. That's classic!

lol the "slap" play is funny. all the red sox players had NO problem with it till the king of whining and complaining schilling said something about it around january. then all of a sudden they all had a problem with it.

Shaugnnesy this year was the best though.

"It's OK to say it. Don't worry about jinxing them. The 2005 Red Sox are going to win the American League East. By a landslide. Come late September, this is going to look like Secretariat at the Belmont in 1973...

After looking up at the Orioles for two frustrating months, the Sox moved into first place Friday night and they are there to stay. Stop worrying about the Yankees, Orioles, and Jays. It's not even going to be close."

Still won't have any rings, but that seems to be all right with him. He took up 3rd to try and win for them, he should get on the bump and give that a whirl.

Check back again in a month.

So what does that make everyone else in the league seeing as a little girl is one of, if not the best all around player in the game?

Am I the only one that thinks it's a tad fruity that a whole "nation" of fans calls a large dominican man nothing but "big papi"? Sounds like something that would happen in prison.

I'd give it a couple weeks rather than a month.

Well, it'll take a month for everything to happen. World series in two 1/2 weeks, then mvp first week of november.

And, ARod will win the mvp while continuing to be the best player of the generation, OH WELL.

... and continue to be the classless clown that he is. IF he ever wins a title it will be due to Jeter and Posada. AROD is hated in every city he has played for a reason. I have a hunch NY will not be different.

Oh yea I hate the Yankees! Cant you tell? B)

as a redsox fan i have to say big papi for mvp!

I think Ortiz is a great player and does a lot for the Sox, but you can't discount what Rodriguez does in the field. To be a short stop all your life and move over to third because Derek Jeter is there first, and still play gold glove defense says a lot about him. In the 80's, if you had a choice between somebody like Gretzky with a 212 point season vs. somebody who put up 180 pounds with Selke winning defense, it'd be hard to pick the guy that puts up a few more points.

Keep in mind I'm a Blue Jays fan, so naturally I have to hate the Red Sox and the Yankees for giving my team no realistic hope of making the playoffs for the next dozen years.

No doubt, Arod has the edge over the Latino Monster because of the field he plays. If Big Papi was to play some other postition he would be MVP, but hes getting paid to hit the ball and thats it. I think you will see Arod win MVP only because of the plays he makes a 3rd. Yes i am a Bo Sox fan but have to give it to Arod.

You will see Boston beat Chichago

You will see the Yanks be LA

You will see Boston go the distance with the Yanks, but still win

Boston will face Houston in the World Series

You can hold the fact that he plays DH against Ortiz, but you can't discount how clutch he is. A-Rod hits like a Brave when the pressure's on.

Different situation. Chicago still controlled their destiny by winning (playoff matchups). Texas had nothing to do with it.

Do you hear that? I hear beeping? It's the red sox backing into the playoffs.

Yea they backed into the playoffs by beating the Yankees 2 out of 3 in Boston. Should have swept the schleps from NY for sure.

What????

They won seven of their last ten games and tied the Yankees. However, the Yanks' pitching finally showed up in September and the Yanks went 15-3 going into the series against the Sox. I have to give the Yankees credit and say they won the division a lot more than the Sox lost it.

(And believe me, I wanted nothing more than to see the Yanks' $200M payroll golfing early. I even told my wife after Saturday's game that I was strangely unenthusiastic about Sunday's game, because I had been rooting the entire season against the Yankees making the playoffs, and I became depressed when they did. :( Irrational, I know, but that's life as a Sox fan.....)

Anyway, onto Big Papi. Francona made a good point when he said that, although the MVP has always be given to fielders, no one has ever won it for their fielding -- it's always been based on their offensive performance. And Ortiz has been significantly more clutch than A-Rod this year. I saw a statistic last week comparing their stats from the seventh inning on, which is considered a measure of performing under pressure. Their batting averages were similar, but Ortiz had nearly twice as many homers and RBI's.

I guarantee you teams would pitch to A-Rod before they would pitch to Papi. The guy just has a flair for drama. Obviously, A-Rod is a great player, but this is one season where the DH actually was More Valuable to his team.

I'm a big Yankees fan but I gotta give Papi his props (maybe it's because I lived in the DR for 7 years.) He's sick - I remember the years when you could just jam him inside and he'd miss. Yes, it is the most valuable player to your team, and that's what he's been.

If Ortiz was still playing 1B people would be holding his poor fielding against him. I see no problem keeping that in the debate.

Ortiz isn't the mvp on his team, it's Manny. If there's no Manny, Ortiz gets junk, and he swings at junk more often than not.
