Helmets for the larger skulled gentleman?

Recommended Posts

OK. I don't think I have a particularly large head (keep telling myself I'm not a freak, I'm not a freak).

I have an XL Bauer helmet. And it fits, but its maybe a little too snug. It sometimes gives me a headache after I wear it for a bit, and feels like its pressing in too hard on the side of my head.

I have extended it as much as I can, but its the width thats the biggest problem.

Does anyone know of helmets that may suit elephant men like myself

Cheers

The Itech HC100 is a little wider than most Bauers and the Jofa 690 is the widest helmet I've worn. I need a large in most brands but a medium in the Jofa fits me very well.

I can confirm with Chad that the Itech 100 is pretty damned wide. I have one myself and it sort of rattles around on my head so much that I'm considering changing brands (in fact, I'm working something out currently with a different member from the boards - if it works out, I can sell you my old Lg Itech 100 on the cheap (like $20), still in good condition).

But... not sure if a Lg would be good for ya or not....

Good to be back on this forum again! B)

I have a fairly wide head and I've only found the new Itech HC100 and the Bauer 8000's to be wide enough for me, however the Itech feels awkward on my head, but the 8000's feel amazing.

It really depends on the shape of your head which large helmet you need. Like others mentioned earlier, the Bauer 4000 comes in an XL, but it is more long front-to-back than it is wide.

What kind of Bauer helmet do you have Allsmokenopancake? If you have a 4000 XL, and that it's too small, then I can tell you, you have a FREAKING huge head.

If I were you, I would try to enlarge it like the way shown on the picture. Hold it like that for about 10 seconds. If it's not a 4000, you probably have an 8000. If you got an 8000, be careful not to break the EPP foam when twisting the helmet because EPP isn't very flexible. If it's the 4000, don't worry. You can repeat this squeezing a few times before using it.

You could also leave a paint can (or something to that effect) inside the helmet to "stretch" it out between games.

I have, in principle, worked out a deal for a new brain bucket.

Once I get it, I'll have an HC100 (large, black) available, and could sell it for like $20 if you want. No cracks, no major scraps/cuts in the plastic, no tears on the interior.

As pointed out above the Mission Carbster is pretty big. I have a size L and it's wider than the L Nike 0004 I was using before that one. It's much more comfortable - my head is 23 1/2 inches around and the L Carbster fits great. I imagine an XL would accomidate a pretty large noggin'.

Oddly, I have a Carbster as well, and it is not well shaped for my head. Moved to the HC100 (while the Carbster is sitting in my closet doubling as a dust collector) which was better, but still not quite right (slides around a tad in certain directions - just can't get it to where it's "good" for me).

As for the foam, I wouldn't carve foam out (it's what protects your head, after all, but also voids it's certification (although, doubt anyone would ever catch it).

Guess it's all dependent on where it's pinching, though.

The pros have been doing that forever (carving out the foam)

If his head is wide, carving a little bit out to accommodate that won't be that big of a deal.

That's the key part. You don't want to shave half the foam away, but you really shouldn't have to take out that much either.

I have a rediculously big head and the Bauer 8000 large is the only helmet that fits me. Jofa XL is too tight, same with one of those newer CCM XL's.
