I would suggest 1/2" if you're unsure of what you've had in the past.

Duckjob lives in Anaheim and he sends me steel to sharpen. Which kinda tells me that people in that area suck when it comes sharpening.

Here's how I look at it. You've bought the skates from them, you don't live locally - no repeat sharpening business...slap and go...

If you ask me skate hollows should go metric -- those fractions give me a headache.

Fractions are the one "math" I had no problem with, those metric though, whew! :D

SAE blows big time. I mean, wtf? Why the heck is a foot 12 inches? And then an inch divided into an infinite number of fractions. Would be much better if America switched over.

Well, we use a certain part of our body to come up with the foot (12") measurement. Your Metric rulers would just be too short for us. hehe.

what is the best shapening depth for a 6"4 180 pound forward? open for any input.

Thank you

Depends on your ability and skating style and leg strength, and ice temps too. And of course whether you've been skating with 'training wheel" 3/8" or 7/16 hollows.

I'd recommend starting with 17/32. Skate on that a while, then shallow to 9/16.

It's a slow process. You may even find yourself at 3/4 or shallower. At 180 lbs you can skate on shallower hollows, but adjusting has to be slow in small increments.

i am 5'11 185 (im not a string bean like you haha) and i historically have skated on 1/2 radius. about 1.5 months ago i shallowed it to 9/16, very easy adjustment, loved it, so i decided to move up to 5/8, which was a little bit more difficult, ive only skated on 5/8 once though, so i will get used to it. but i love it. im a very good skater, i just never thought about changing my hollow. But i feel so much more "free" from the shackles of the ice..... hahahaa. Seriously though once you get used to it you will love it i highly reccomend a shallower hollow if you are a good skater (im a defense man by the way just if ur wondering, not a quick-turning lil' forward)

You are a perfect example of what skaters should do and that is expirement with different hollows and def go shallow!

Definatly listen to the guys on this board.

The 'in' thing here in my area was to cut 3/8 or 7/16. After reading up on it here I switched to 1/2 and I feel like I'm flying out there! Key word 'feel' lol.

I'm a winger that loves quick turns and I have had no problems switching over.
