hockey helmets

Recommended Posts

my head is really, really wide, to the point that not many helmets fit me. I am using a tacks 852 right now because it seems to be the only helmet that'll fit me, and even still i have to shave down some of the padding, does anyone know if there is a wider helmet? i've tried bauer 5000, 4000, tacks 1052, HT500

also, does anyone know why the tacks 652 helmet is so popular in the NHL?

To answer the other question, the 652 is the new name for the HT2.

why is it so popular? shouldn't a newer model like the bauer 5000 provide more protection/comfort versus an older style helmet?

Ever heard the term old habits never die? Well it's just that, these players like the feel of the HT2, and refuse to change. Gretz wore that crappy Jofa helmet forever and it had almost no protection in it at all.

There are some people who believe that the new helmets with the hard foam are less protective than the old models.

I have a wide head too and my itech hasnt felt right for a year now. It was the closest thing to a good fit out there (its a large) but its really rubs against my temples so i've been getting headaches 1 out of 2 icetimes since i've had it so i'll prolly trade it in and buy another one. What would be a good fit other than any of the above?

I have an all around large head, and my Nike 0004 (same as Bauer 4000) XL fits me perfectly. You might want to check out the new Bauer 8000, I believe its adjustable in both length and width.

With helmets, I really dont' care how ugly they are. They're the one piece of equipment you don't have to look at when you're wearing it.

does anyone know about the adjustability of a Bauer 8000 helmet? does anyone know how it actually works?

Same here, except i'm running a bauer HH4000, large, with smaller padding extended as far as it goes, and I throw a hot water bottle in the helmet before games to get it more pliable so I can get it on my head :(

The Bauer HH4000 is a fairly narrow helmet, most of the other models/brands are wider.

I'd say the Jofa helmets are the widest/roundest ones out there, followed by Itech. If you can find an old Cooper 2000, they fit round/wide also.

I'll bump this 4-yr old thread instead of starting a new one...

What's the widest helmet out there these days?

I ask because I had a gentlemen come in the store earlier today with a rather wide (ok, extremely wide) head, and none of the helmets did the trick for him. Not even close, really. The closest we got was with an 8K Large, but even then, he couldn't get it on completely.

(Others we tried: NBH 4500 XL, Mission Intake L, CCM 652 L, and these weren't even close.)

I'm asking out of curiosity more than anything. Should this happen again, I'd like to, at the very least, point him in the right direction.

(The gentlemen in question said he's always had problems finding a helmet that fits; he said that when he was younger, he used a Spalding (!) helmet)

Try Bauer 8500...with the occipital lock, and a lot length adjustment there is a lot of overlap between sizes. Has solve my sons wide head problem. it was the only one we found that would work.

I have a wide head and it doesn't fit in the cheaper Bauers. I fit into the Mission Intake in a medium and a Bauer 8500 in a large, so I figured go with the smaller one that fits and went Mission (plus it was $40 cheaper). I'd have to think it's a wider helmet.
