Axelsson didn't have too much trouble shutting him down last night.

Reading the boxscore and watching the game are two totally different things. Sure, he got shut down stat-wise, but to say not too much trouble is not really accurate.

And anyone who says he can't pass doesn't have a clue (not saying that to anyone in particular). If his teammates were better, Ovechkin would be leading the league in pts right now, because he would have a lot more assists.

I did watch the game. Axelsson kept Ovechkin from having any real chances most of the game. Ovechkin's best chance came when he rang one off the post.

The biggest difference that I see between the two is that you always know when Ovechkin is on the ice. Even wearing a "normal" number like 8, he just sticks out on the ice. The funny thing is that even translates to TV. Meanwhile Crosby seems to "appear" every once in a while during the game. In the last couple games I've seen with Crosby (not his last couple games) they seem to mention his name as much when he's on the bench as they do when he's on the ice.

Why dont the caps spend some money and get some players to play with ovechkin? They had a article about this in THN.

they have a lot of high first and second round draft picks eaither in the NHL or in their system and really want to give them a chance to play in the NHL. Their coach is very good with young players and has the team getting better every game. I really like watching their games right now because they go out and just flat out try to outwork the other team. Give this group another two years and they will be a very good team.

i'd rather see the caps build from within with draft picks and young players than try to buy acouple. alex will be around for years, so there shouldn't be any rush. ....and props to kolzig stating he'd rather stay a cap than be traded to a contented short term.

I just feel like bumping this thread.

Since it's hard for all the Ovechkin jockers to say much about him as Crosby shows him up on the same sheet of ice.

I was pleased with this result too !!!

I'm amazed how much hate Sid can get. I kind of like the guy.

Like AO too : phenom player too

But this game should quiet the dogs barking at Sid's door for a few minutes... I hope

Being a Canadian hockey fan, I was cheering for the Americans and hoping beyond hope the Russians would get spanked at the 05 WJCs (Don't ask me what all those morons in my home city here were doing cheering for the Russians over the Americans at the 06 tourney?!?!). I was absolutely disgusted with Ovechkin and Malkin and their childish antics at that tournament. When he came into the NHL, I had him pegged as another selfish, showboating Russian hockey player. Over the last few months though, his hard working, physical, and dazzling style of hockey combined with a much better attitude have really made me a fan of his. We'll see if Malkin can do the same next year.

I'll admit Crosby played VERY well last night, that doesn't change tha fact that Ovechkin is a better player overall in the league through the season.

Not sure if that is true when you consider their shooting percentages are just about the same and their 5 on 5 point totals are Ovechkin 33 and Crosby 31. Sounds to me like they are playing fairly even. Sure, Ovechkin is leading in total points but he tends to play the entire powerplay whereas Crosby is only on one of the pp units.

Not to sound like a Crosby basher, because there shouldn't be any doubt that hes a force in this league, but the game last night clearly indicated the superiority of talent Crosby has on his team (yeah I know the players haven't showed up all season), but like many people have said if Ovechkin had above average linemates he would most likely lead the league in scoring.

He does, but he doesn't seem to control the flow as well as Crosby. It's the difference in play where Crosby is a set-up man and Ovechkin is a scorer. Sure they can both pass and score, but each has their own bread and butter style.

I look at it as AO is unstoppable, no matter who is on him, he will produce, and may improve with better players, but not to an unbelievable level. Crosby can be stopped, simple by shutting down his linemates, but if he is with guys who add alot, he makes that line collectively better than a line where he is replaced by AO.

Maybe...

But there is no question of which one makes themselves more visible out there and who is the more complete player as of now. But they play such different styles, it is hard to compare.

But don't forget about the intangibles...

Ovechkin is a plus 2 on a team that has a -48 Goal differential. Crosby a -8 on a team that has a -55 goal differential. Ovechkin drills guys and is a physical presence as well.

And they both make their teammates better...I read the other day someone wrote that only Crosby does, and that is a joke...Sorry.

If Ovechkin makes his teammates better, then why does the next closest guy on the team have 27 less points. Ovechkin has 29 powerplay points, the next closest guy has 13, and that is the quarterback of the pp. How is that making your teammates around you better?

Because without Ovechkin the guy would probably only have 5 powerplay points. :D

Hate to burst your bubble, but I've watched guys clamp down on Ovechkin and keep him off the scoresheet, as well.

The bottom line is, both guys are going to have sick numbers in their careers, but the bet here is that Ovechkin will probably wind up being the next Bure playing the diamond in the rough and Crosby will become the next Ronnie Francis. If I want my team to win, I want the next Ronnie Francis.
