Zipper on hockey pants

Recommended Posts

Been watching a lot of college hockey lately, and I've noticed a lot of the players unzip the zippers on their pants, on the inside leg. I do this also, because it keeps me cool. A lot of people that I play with do the same. And then like nobody in the NHL does it. Why? Are people afraid a D man is going to take advantage of that unprotected space in front of the net? I only bring this up because it really makes a difference in how I keep cool on the ice.

I used to play with them unzipped because it was cooler, which I liked. I recently had to switch because they made a rule that they had to be zipped

you will definitley feel a big difference in temperature if you unzip them though. its just that if you havent tried going with an open zipper, its not something you would complain about either

a junior player once told me to open up my zippers because it would make skating much easier. i tried it, and there was a difference, but i kept getting hassled by refs to close up my zipper so i stopped doing it. i actually enjoy the feeling of being moderately hot for a game, it gets my adrenaline pumping.

I've skated for long periods of time both ways and it makes no difference at all if your gear fits you properly.

And I would just like to add that pants like the bauer 8000 I have no issues at all. the new type of set-up with the light and stretchy material there is no restriction..when I skate backwards I feel wind go up my :o so I stay cool.

I don't really notice a difference. My 8Ks always seem to open up while I'm skating and I don't notice it until I look down. However, in my previous pants, Easton Z-airs, unzipping the pants made all the difference in the world, those things sucked.

I have a pair of bauer 5000's that were pro stock (or maybe NCAA?) but the ventalation was so good on them I have no reason to want zippers on them. (They had no zippers)

Then when the school tried to make me wear a blue shell over my NAVY pants (which are our school colors...) I asked our athletic director if he was f-ing serious. I did wear it for one period, but when my body was like super hot after the first period I said screw that and promptly took my shell off.

i think having broken in/worn in pants makes a big difference. when i first got my synergy 700s, those things were damn stiff and the zipper made a big difference but after a couple weeks, they've loosened up nicely.

That sounds so wrong...

THere, few modifications to the post, and I think the point is evident. My 8000's dont have zippers so that solvs that issue.

I wear a girdle, because i dont like how pants fit, and i used to have my girdle and shell cut. This year though, I have the Bauer girlde with the adjustable legs, but i still wore the cut shell. I got so many misconducts for the cut shell. I once had to tape around my legs to close it up, or the ref wouldnt let me back on the ice.

I think that the Elite league here in the UK is in the process of passing a rule that in short requires a player to have his zippers zippered up, or be assessed an illegal use of equipment minor. :o

Thats what our league is here, You get a warning first, then second time its a 2 minute minor. Although i've only ever had one ref actually care about that rule, and i got a penalty for it this year, I hate the zippers, they ALWAYS come undone.. tried taping etc.. just gets in the way.

When I had CCM pants I undid the zippers and taped over the velcro that was to cover the zippers so they didnt stick together anyways. Then they got all beat and I had to buy new pants, I couldn't find any I liked that had zipper legs but no strings to tie at the top or crotch area, so I ended up getting RBK 6K's. I thought, either undo zippers and have them loose or have something that fits right up against and moves around with my leg, so that either way my pants would feel less bulky. I found that having the RBK adjustable pad tight up wiht my leg felt as good as having my old pants unzipped so that it felt like nothing was around my leg, which is what I hate about hockey pants. I always felt like my skating was being restricted, so I unzipped them so that they were real loose and my thigh could move around inside the pants. Anyways, the RBK pants, with the thigh pad strapped real tight arond my leg works real well for me, and I can leave the zipper zipped with them so I dont get any refs giving me a hard time.

yeah, that happend to me, the velcrow would either stick to my socks, or the the velcrow on the other side of the zipper that it was supposed to attach to to cover the zipper, so I just wrapped a shitload of clear tape around the one side of the velcrow and it was fine.
