Very WIDE question about patterns!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, i just discovered this hockey forum, it's awesome. For my first post, i'll start big. B) I have a giant question for you guys:

I wanna know how patterns will change your game. For example, how does a heel curve behave on stickhandling, shooting, accuracy, etc... I've always played with standard mid-closed curved but i noticed a LOT of good players now use heel curves (I see a lot in pro patterns)

Here are the general pattern specifics i'd like to clarify about their performance on Stickhandling, Shooting (Wrist, snap and slap), Passing, Control, Power, Accuracy, etc.

-Heel, mid, toe curve, where's the difference?

-Dept

-Opened, closed, neutral (I presume opened will lift the puck easier)

Are there better curves for defenseman/offense?

And last question, i'd like to know what YOU use and why.

If everyone can tell me a little about it, i'll know everything!! :D

Thank you!!

Not that the pros influence me (hell yea do they unfortunatly <_< ) but every pro pattern i've seen to this date had a heel curve, most of the times open. Am i wrong here?

i've yet to use a toe curve but so far my big wedge (Bauer PH2/Nike PH2/Easton Lidstrom/RBK Pronger) was really good but after I used the Vapor XXX Lite Naslund I for some reason can't stick handle with my PH2 Apollo like I used to.

I use sackic, but I preffer something a tad shorter and not quite as open. Aka Yzerman Jr. I find that a blade with a lot of loft affects your toe drags. For example, you have to roll the blade over more to get the same angle on the puck compared to a toe drag with a neutral blade.

Im using a sakic atm as i have 2 si-core z-carbons with that pattern, and its proving very hard to get new ones atm, im in love with iggy patterns, closed, can do everything with it, also like francis, but would prefere a little more urve on the toe of that one!

I've heard the "60% of the NHL use a YP (Drury Retail)" kinda pattern alot, but it would be fun to see a statistic of the top10 point getters in the NHL, and see what curve they use....

People like Jagr and Kovalchuk who are among the premium goal scorers use huge "euro" mid-toe curves that don't resemble the YP at all...

The only point getters I know of the bat that use a YP are Theo Fluery and Henrik Zetterberg.

Most of the great players I know of Gretzky, Mario etc. don't or didn't use drury curves, and it didn't affect their game...

Like half of the people here would say.... PP but would still like to see a pattern stat over the top10 players in the nhl atm. (guess someone like #96 would know it  )

I switch back and forth between the TPS 0289 (basically a retail Drury with a bit less loft) and a Nilson Pro (basically a retail Drury with more loft). I find the heel curve is solid for passing (including saucers), stickhandling and shooting (works best with snap shots and slap shots). I've tried some mids and toes but I find that I don't get the same all around performance.

I have been using Koho wood sticks, with the Jagr pattern up until recently, when I bought a bauer OPS (my first composite) from Ogie in the sell section here. It is a Gagne P10 pattern, and its really helped me get a bit of lift in my puck.

I am still in the lower rung level of skill but getting better. Because the Jagr pattern is pretty closed faced and the gagne is not very open, it was a good(ish) transition.

Our LHS had the louisville rubber shafts on sale for $50 (they are older models not new ones) so I picked up one of those this past weekend, and intend to get a couple of cheap wood blades with different patterns now to experiment with.

I don't know what pattern I should use, or if it will come with practice, but I still cant for the lift of me get any lift with a backhand, just skids along the ice

right now sakic or any clone is my perfect pattern, id like to try a sakic with a square toe

How is the face; opened, closed, neutral?

Curve depth?

Pros and cons?

Thank you! :)

Heel curves are just lovely. I'm toying with moving my wedges closer to the middle rather than the heel and liking them, but I always float back to heels.

Personally, I love heel wedges. My preference is the Drury pattern and soon I will be getting the Drury curve with a square toe on some Sherwood 950 SOP blades. I'll take some pictures when they arrive.

right now i have a Sakic, which is great for stickhandleing and wristers, but before i had a Lecavalier and it was crazy good for roofing slappers, and pretty good for wristers.

I'm interested in a Drury or Sakic pattern (lie 5.5) but my perfect lie is 5. Would a 0.5 lie difference really change anything or it's just a tiny difference that shouldn't change my game?

The .5 lie difference does make a difference in shooting and passing technique as a lower lie will put the puck further away from your body.

The salming #44 is a 5 lie Drury and the Fury #24 is also a 5 lie drury
