Recommended Pro Shop in NYC or NJ? (USA)

Whereabouts in Jersey?

I'll just throw out a list...

Sports Section - Cedar Grove, NJ - Pretty decent selection, former Devils equipment guy runs it.

Ice House - Hackensack, NJ - Also good selection, I'm sure DarkStar could fill you in on more.

Ed K Sports - Whippany, NJ - Not that great, but you can find some older stuff there once in a while.

Ice Vault - Wayne, NJ - Good selection of stuff, pretty good sharpening for the one time I wen there.

Paragon sports and gerry cosby's in NYC have fairly good selections right at the moment. Wonderland sports at chelsea piers. All three of these places have a lot of ops. Wonderland is prob the best for overall protective, cosby's has the best skate tech if that is important to you. Wonderland carries graf. Umm.... what are you looking for specifically?

I want a place that will properly bake a pair of CCM tacks and provide a nice sharpening, an appropriate hollow for a semi-beginner like me.

Paragon Sports looked a little too mall-like for me. The guy down there sized me very incorrectly. I had to tell him the CCM's were about 1.5 sizes smaller! He was ready to size me in a pair of tacks a half size smaller than my shoe size.

How can you bag on Dr. Hook?

Ice House gets my vote, although I hear they listen to the Grateful Dead all day long :D

Large African American fellow? - Is the Mikey the guy who was at Peck & Goodie for years? If so great kid, worked for me @ Blades

I'm at Ice House Sunday through Thursday, in late til 9 on Tuesday/Wednesday. Give me a call to let me know what you are looking for 201 487-8444 x 235 Pro Shop. This Monday/Tuesday I won't be in, otherwise I'm there.

Lately we have been listening to Mike and the Mad Dog talk about Wayne Betzky on the FAN!

Yep. I miss the old Peck and Goodie shop. He's really the only guy on this island who can sharpen a skate well.

They're not the greatest stores out there, but the Voorhees Flyers skate Zone has a pretty decent Pro Shop, and I have heard the Mt. Laurel Igloo has a good shop too. These are in south Jersey

I live in the city (moved here in July).  I recommend Westside Skate and Stick.  They do an awesome job, and are anal about attention to detail.  I won't take my skates anywhere else.

I met both of these groups at the Boston show, and they came across as really nice guys.

Ocean Ice Hockey Supply Company. They have a website. Not sure what it is. Try searching the above name in yahoo or google, should come right up.

They are a pretty big store attached to an ice hockey rink that jim dowd grew up playin in. Located right off the Garden State Parkway, exit 98 I believe in Brick.

Peter? Nice? Peter at Ice House, nice? Hardly the word I used to describe him.

Haha, actually even before I knew Pete was on here, he was always one of the nicest guys down there at the Ice House shop and I always looked forward to having him help me out with stuff while I was in there.

Now, Jim...whole other story...

Nah Jim is an ok guy. It just seems like he's always got a bit of an attitude or doesn't really go the extra mile. Peter on the other hand, before I even knew who he was, was always willing to help, always willing to "go take a look in the back". It was like Jim just never had or wanted to devote too much to an individual.

Sounds like you've got a lot of options! I am stuck here in the city (Manhattan) w/o a car, so Westside skate is my most convenient option.

I agree JR, $15 is not cheap, but thankfully I don't need to get them sharpened that often. Besides everything is expensive here.

Given all the stuff that has happened since I moved here, playing hockey is one of the few things that has kept me sane.

Jim gets stuck 24/7 with the figure skating crowd. They drive him nuts because Buffy ripped the lace on her Graf Edmonton Specials and the driver doesn't know how to put the new laces in her boots. Trust me, this happens. He never says no to any of them so they take total advantage of him. By the time somebody asks him a hockey ?, he is baked!!!

I like seein those little figure skaters down at the rink. You just never know how old they are. Even the older ones look like they're 12. Their ritzy moms aren't so bad either...
