Help me! I can't stop buying stuff.

Recommended Posts

I just started playing ice hockey again after a 10 yr. layoff. Of course I had to buy new stuff. Actually I bought some new and some used stuff. Now I cannot stop buying. I have some Easton Air hockey gloves that are only 2 months old but I made the mistake of trying on some Vapor XX gloves and I fell in love with them. Should I drop $135.00 on the new Vapors when I already have good gloves? I like the Eastons except for the color (Navy blue and yellow). I want all black gloves. I don't make six figures so I should just be happy with what I have BUT I can't. My wift is about to KILL ME!!! HELP!!!!

I had that problem when I started as well, but now I save the money for clinics, drop-in and sticks and pucks. If only I could do the same for my golf game...

Now we know what women are like when they can't stop buying shoes or purses or something!

I've just started up again too - I had to buy everything brand new so I don't have any equipment envy...yet. I didn't buy the most expensive stuff but not the cheapest either. My wife was shocked when my tab was over $700 just to get started.

What she doesn't know is that I just paid $100 for a Vapor VI (yes, now I realize I could have got it online for a lot less, but I don't wait for stuff). Luckily it's easy to hide stuff from the wife since she doesn't really keep track of what I buy.

Bottom line - I can't tell you how to stop since I'm kind of the same way. There must be a 12 step program somewhere.

I did get a killer deal on a pair of Vapor XIX skates. $145.00 on Ebay (NEW) for a pair that usually costs $250.00. I think the first step to recovery (at least for me) is to stay OUT of the pro shop.

I hear 'ya. The problem I have is the LHS right near me has the biggest selection of fancy sticks in town. It's hard to resist picking up a new one each time I get my skates sharpened.

Or go there for fun and literally do not take any money or credit cards. And DON'T try to open a tab there when you have no money or credit cards!

I had taken 4 or 5 years off, and when I started back up, I went through the same thing. There was so much cool new stuff, I couldn't stop buying.

I took a lot of heat from my wife.

Here's how to beat it:

First, you will need to slow down on the purchases.

Now let's say you want those vapor gloves (but don't need them.) And you really need a new helmet.

Buy the gloves. Be sure to tell your wife what the retail price was and what a great deal you got on them. Try something like: "I was going to need a new pair in a year or so, and this deal was too good to pass up. I save around $70 on them."

Now in 2 or 3 months, inform her your helmet is failing. Ask her what to do. "Should I buy a new helmet? Or, should I keep using my broken one? It probably will protect me..." She'll tell you to get a new one. Now go buy your RBK 8K or Bauer 8000 or whatever. (Make sure she knows what a good price you got it for)

If you would have bought the helmet first, you'd be stuck with your old gloves because you "just bought a new helmet..."

when I started playing again, I went in to my local shop to get some pucks+ came out with new wheels, bearings, stick blades+ ordered a new helmet! spending cash I didnt have! all I did afterwards is just go there for the essentials+ only took the money that I needed for the item, so the big stuff I now order from web sites+ I have someone sat with me so I dont order what I dont need

I hate to hear that people won't go to shops anymore. All it takes is a little willpower to not come home with more than you need.

I guess part of feeling good about your game is looking the part. Whats funny is years ago( when I actually had skills) we would laugh at the old farts that would spend $1000.00 on all the newest gear and they would hit the ice and could barely stand up. I'm not that bad but maybe I'm becoming one of those guys. What I really need to do is work on my game until I get good enough to warrant the top stuff. If you guys see the Easton gloves on the SELL board, you will know I gave in to temptation. ;)

I haven't really been shopping but I've been spending a lot of time looking around (here and ebay) for one of those high end OPS. I'm still not sure what to go for.. Bauer Vapor xxx or xxx-lite (not sure what the difference is still) a Synergy SL or just go back to the Stealth I'm using now. Eastons have the upper hand right now because I got so used to the Gaborik curve but I was looking to try out the Yzerman curve.

For those trying to stop buying stuff: coming to this site is one of the worst things you can do.

With all do respect, self control is not all of our problems when it comes to buying gear online.

I can't find the equipment I like locally. I recently purchased high end jofa 9090 shin and 9141 elbow pads online because noone locally still sells them and I don't want to buy RBK stuff. I have Tackla 5000X pants and Graf G9 skates as well. I purchased both online a year or so ago because noone sells them here either and that is what I like.

Personal preference and availability play a large role in purchasing online. Why pay more to have my lhs order the stuff for me when they won't drop ship them to my house. I have to go to the store when they get them in and pay a much higher percentage for them + and I say + the tax. It is almost a savings of around 20% purchasing online because you save on tax and on the lhs markup.

I know none of the mods are going to like this post but it is the truth for some of us. The price difference between my lhs and the internet is astronomical to say the least.

There are always times when local shops don't offer what you want, especially if you don't want to buy the big three.

And did everyone foret about ordering through the LHS ?

As for the spending addiction my excuse is to my dad, Im just turning around and selling it again and making money + If me or any of my friends need stuff they know where to go. Only way to learn I guess is wish you had your money back...

maybe instead of just buying every high end peice of equipment u see, try reasearching every thing, and seeing which one u would like best instead of wasting ur money buying 3 or 4 high end OPS. u could try to get top of the line equipment onm close out too, its probably the same thing or very close to the new high end equipment just a year older

O yes, I am very good at finding the best deals and thats just the problem. Its not that I want the very best stuff. I keep buying like two year old stuff or something but its such a good idea that I cant give it up even if I dont need it. So I have a four shelves of spare hockey equiptment in the back of my garage because of it.

well u could give all ur extra equipment to me :D jk. u could get some cash by selling it on ebay or the sell thread. if u have friends that play hockey u could sell it to them, or u could donate it to ur local rink for equipment rentals for people just starting hockey (we have that at my rink).

theres lot of options, or u could a few thing at a time, buy more, and build more shelves :D :D
