Doc & JD

Recommended Posts

I have been listening to Doc Emrick and John Davidson together since the Olympics. They are past driving me nuts now. Since these two have been paired together in the booth the commentary of the game has turned into a never ending stream of useless trivia and see how I many obscure useless facts I can tell you about from Doc and poor JD telling us about "something called the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP", etc. JD, the only people watching the f'n hockey on OLN already know about the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP and know who Conn Smythe was. There are virtually no first time hockey fans watching these games that need to be educated about hockey facts that 99.9% of us know. JD, please stop and give us in game insight. That is your specialty. As for Doc, I really don't care that Jaro Spacek's father's Czech team finished fifth in the 80 Olympics in the middle of one more Cam Ward miracle glove save or that Doug Weight's uncle was the guy who pumped diesel fuel in the bus that drove Doug's Lake Superior State college team coached by crazy Frank Anzalone(see I know useless trivia too that is totally trivial and useless!) across Michigan in the worst blizzard since 1888. I was never a big fan of Gary Thorne either("Bourque reaches the blue." Its a blueline, not a "blue.") but at least he bothered to call the play-by-play. Thats my morning rant, I'm done.

I'm with you on that. I prefer the commentary form the TSN crew over these two. I didn't mind Andy Brickley during the conference finals though.

I've hated them since the first time I ever saw a game they called. It's going on about six years of hatred now.

The passive voice has to stop. I'm more annoyed to hear Doc get to the point a minute after he started a sentence about what happened ten seconds before he started saying it than when Microsoft Word picks out one or two such sentences in everyone of my papers with that squiggly green line. It's endless too. One delayed sentence after another. It annoys me when they use an extra adjective that is assumed: goal-net, catching glove, goal crease. WTF. When does anyone talk about any other glove, the referee's crease, or any other net (if it goes into the netting at the top it's pretty obvious)? They should be relegated to local broadcasts of high school hockey until they get it right, and at that, just regular season. They don't deserve any kind of playoff airtime.

I just about turned it off when one of them told me it was Hemsky taking a one-timer from the LW hash-marks when it was obviously Stoll.

I still think the way to go in the finals is to have each teams broadcasters split the series....

For example -

Game 1 - Carolina's broadcasters

Game 2 - Edmonton's broadcasters

Game 3 - Carolina's broadcasters

Game 4 - Edmonton's broadcasters

Game 5 - Carolina's broadcasters

Game 6 - Edmonton's broadcasters

Game 7 - Carolina's broadcasters

This way both teams would get to hear their own broadcasters call the finals while at the same time it would still be on national television.

Only if they promise not to act like homers. Jim Jackson does a credible job on OLN but is a raving lunatic when he does Flyer games.

It's just OLN and the NHL trying to vanilla up the game and it's definitely pretty annoying. I'm generally more annoyed by the way JD refuses to call out the refs for making terrible calls (as was happening all last night)

every single time JD starts talking about a player he has to start out with where they are from, who they played for in college/juniors, or who they're related to...and like everybody else is saying, it bugs me nearly to the point where i watch the game with the sound off

At least you don't have to listen to 95 year old Bob Cole screw up on 99% of delayed penalities, either not noticing them, or repeatedly confusing which team has the penalty. Is it so difficult to understand the concept that if Team A is holding the puck when the whistle is blown and the Ref has his hand in the air, then Team A has the penalty?

Perfect example was Stall's highstick on Pronger last night, CBC showed a replay of it, claimed Stall got away with one (even though there had been a mysterious stoppage in play once Carolina touched the puck), then cut back to a picture of Stall sitting in the box and Cole finally realizing there was a call.

Or claiming that every point shot that goes in was tipped, when replay clearly shows nobody touched it. Otherwise, if he does suggest it was tipped, about 90% of the time he identifies the wrong person.

However what pisses me off the most about just every hockey broadcast is the never EVER show replays of a close offside call. Are linesmen that awesome that they never in the history of the league screw up? The only 'bad calls' you might see are usually at least 5-10 minutes after the fact, but more often show up after the game on a show like SportsCentre.

The best Leafs broadcasters are by far Joe Bowen and Harry Neale.

I get CBC HD, but not TSN, so I'm actually slightly happier when the game is on CBC even if I have to put up with Bob Cole.

HD+Plasma+sports = :D

If anyone has an HDTV but hasnt actually signed up for the HD box from your cable provider, I'd highly recommend it.

They are terrible.

Jim Hughston is the best announcer out there

He might be the most pompous ass I've ever heard do a hockey game. Most of the time you can't even tell if he has a partner in the booth because he doesn't shut up.

I can't hear Hughson anymore without thinking I'm stuck in a Live action EA Sports game.

I hate alot of what Bob Cole and Harry Neale say, but they still call the best game.

I just have to get passed Cole's constant referal to the wrong player, and enjoy his call of the game.

But damn are they ever starting to show their age.

"They cancel each other out"

They should be the dream team, but in reality Doc is simply too annoying w/ obscure facts and JD worries too much about causing friction and making people upset

They are the perfect example of where the sum of the parts is actually way less than it should be. Theo, JD and Sam should be the #1 OLN team. Sam Rosen is doing the radio play-by-play in US and is pretty good for a guy who always does TV. He calls the game the way it should be and could care less about some waste of time hockey trivia which Doc thinks all of America will take to the water cooler the next day to talk about. Great play-by-play guys know people like to listen to them because they call the game, not kill it. Take a page from Vin Scully, the LA Dodgers broadcaster. He is a master.

"Its a Power Play Goal!"

I think the best work they have done during the Finals is when they both turn off their mics for about 2 minutes and we can just watch the game and listen to the crowd. 5 minutes to go in the 3rd period of a 2-1 game is not the time to hear about what positions the goalies played when they were 12 years old. Give me game strategy, final line combos over the bench, who is double-shifted, a quick WTF is Peca doing out with 1:30 to go, anything but the Cam Ward goes to a tournament story.

That reminds me of the French CBC when they had Claude Quenville as their play by play guy. He went on and on about a play that started a 30 seconds ago. First thing you knew he was 8 plays behind. He also had a tendency to say things like: Player X thought he could get away with this or that.. how the hell could he know what the player was thinking at the time lol.. Anyway, I'm greatful that the Montreal Canadiens signed an exclusive contract with RDS (French TSN)
