stick grips and palm wear

Recommended Posts

I just got new gloves and after playing a single street hockey game, I'm already seeing noticeable wear/fraying on the heel of my top hand. I'm aware that cloth tape isn't too kind to palms, but all I have is tape on the knob (not a full-length grip).

Any suggestions for stick grips that don't damage palms so badly?

I've tried Powerflex tape on my knob, but it only gets gummy and gooey, and it unravels all the time.

I know what you mean. After recently getting new gloves (and sticks) I got rid of taping the knob and put on a tape product used on the handles of tennis racquets. It's not self-adhesive, but comes with strips of tape to hold the grip down. I haven't used it long enough to determine glove wear, but it does its job as a grip (thought the tape strips are coming undone slightly).

the product is called tourna grip. the same company puts out a rubber overgrip, which I'm using instead of standard tape on my other stick. so far so good, but I've used the stick only 3-4 times.

the co. is Unique Sports and they have, supposedly a website under that name.

Make sure the tape overlaps the top edges of the shaft, it really helps with palm wear.

I switched to Tackimack grips recently and boy was I surprised... I really like em'

All my sticks have the white wrapped grip now, which is pretty much identical to the grips I usually make with tape.

And you can notice the reduction in wear instantly, plus it gives a more consistent grip IMO.

you can find tacki-mack grips at various online stores.

I have seen some people just tape a knob at the top and use nothing for a grip i just got some new gloves and was considering trying this cause but the stick is not new and if i took all the tape off it would be very sticky is there anyway i can get rid of the stickiness or is this just a bad idea.

i like a thick grip. i use powerflex under plastic sox tape. works very well for me. though some would say that the plastic tape creates too much slide. the best way to find something that works for you is to try a bunch of different things.

Just take baby powder, put it on the knob and rub it around the buttend and your good

a better method is to pour the baby powder in the palm of your hand and then cusp the area which you want protected. I find this method helps control getting baby powder all over the place and only putting it where you want to put it.

You could always use rubbing alcohol or even better, a glue solvent from a hardware store or home depot. I've actually used an industrial furniture cleaner spray (I work for an upholstery company) and it works great.

Tacki-macs are awesome. Much better grip than tape and they seem to be easier on the palms than tape.

Don't know if this will help but I actually put Stick wax over the grip tape. It keeps the cloves farily nice and it may add a littel grip and life to your tape. Again I am fairly new to all of this but have done that for 4 seasons know and I am still using the same gloves.

I have used Tacki mac grips since they came out and they have never worn out a pair of gloves like tape does. When I used to use tape I went through a ton of gloves even the old Itech I-90 that had the Kevlar palms (sad. I loved those gloves wish I still had a pair)

Stop choking your stick. Cloth tape has never ruined my palms.

Depends how you hold yourt stick. If you got all of your fingers on the stick it won't ruin your gloves at all or just a bit, but if you only have 3 or 4 fingers on the shaft, it' going to ruin your palm more than the other technique, anyways I think it is better to play with 3 or 4 fingers on the stick and have a better control than having all of your fingers on it and lose control.

Kovy: We hold our sticks the same way, gives alot more control IMO.

My team will get new gloves soon, looking forward to seeing the effects of tacki-mack on a new glove.
