Kessel to skip final year of college?

According to a league source, University of Minnesota forward Phil Kessel has decided to forego the final three years of his college eligibility and sign a three-year contract with the Boston Bruins. The club likely will make the formal announcement on Thursday.

Kessel will earn the entry-level max $850,000 in annual salary for the duration of the contract. He'll also be eligible for significant performance-based bonuses...

As the quote shows, it's his final three years of college. At least I should get to see him in the AHL this year.

He is not even close to NHL ready.....I can't wait for all the Kessel is the next Alexandre Daigle headlines.

He'll have a better career than Daigle just because of his quick release. But if he does that stupid little corssover move that he does like 10 times a game he's going to get killed.

You guys act like he's no good. He obviously posseses important traits that make him a force in the NHL. Will he be an impact player in boston? I don't know, I think if given the chance to play on a good line with like Burgeron, they'll be dangerous.

With the way things were going at the U for him, can't say it's a bad decision to ink with the bruins.

Important traits such as brains and heart. Right.

I didn't say that. The kid's quick. I'm not happy the bruins drafted him, but how about mike modano... he's had a pretty shitty career eh?

I dont think the Bruins were planning on winning the Cup this year so bring him up and let him adapt to the NHL, only good can come of it. So what if he doesn't produce as much as hoped, if he can practice his defensive game and hockey sense at an NHL level the season will be a success for him becuase hes got offensive ability and the goals will come.

Well I think hes a smart enough player and given the right leader he wont suffer. He may have some confidence problems if he doesnt produce like he thinks he should but on a line with Bergeron I think he can definitely put the puck in the net.

Are you mental? 1183 points in 1179 games is shitty? He's averaged at least a point per game in 10 of his 16 seasons. In those other 6, he's gotten 75 points in 80 games, 64 in 79 games, 29 in 30 games, 77 in 78 games (twice), and 44 in 76 games (arguably his worst campaign, in 2003-2004). Yeah, reeeeal shitty.

HockeyDB - Mike Modano

He's the greatest American-born player to ever play in the NHL.

Missed the sarcasm on that one?

I don't really see many similarities between Kessel and Modano though. The traits hockeychamp mentioned are also possessed by Rico Fata.

Who would be the right leader on Boston?

I dont know, I dont follow Boston at all nor am I in their dressing room so I have no clue who the team leader is. Im sure they have some character guys in the room as well as younger guys like Boyes who could show him the NHL ropes. I didnt have one in mind, I was just saying that if one of the players on the team takes him under their wing he wont suffer.

Hopefully they bring him along slowly. He seems very much like a petulant little kid.

When has he evidenced that he is petulant? Honestly, I haven't been up to date regarding his media career thus far

Right, because Kariya was so terrible when he left college after only one year. Kessel has excelled at every level he has played at. He played against pros in the world championships and didn't look out of place at all.

Didn't see the world championships, but Paul Kariya almost single handedly won the NCAA championship. He got the hobey freakin baker after a year. What kessel did does not compare to that. Kariya also played for the canadian national team for a year after his freshman year. Kessel is trying to go straight to the show.
