shockdoctor hockey bag

Recommended Posts

Since the shockdoctor bag is pretty big, is it big enough to fit goalie equipment?

I think if you take out the supports/dividers, goal equipment will fit. I haven't tried mine yet to see but will soon as I talk my wife out of one.

anyone try only buying the blower only and rigging it up with a plastic bin or something? would it work as well, since i'm not one for using a wheel bag or spending $100 for one.

I thought about that - was going to get an ozone generator from ebay and do that. But have since then learned that the ozone treatment isn't the Alpha and Omega and doing that isn't necessary anymore.

Actually not a bad idea. IMO, that is why SD changed design mid-stream on their blower pac, which orig had a hose that plugged in. This new blower is much harder to jury rig to another bag.

Having said that, I sold out first week, mostly people who were on the waiting list. SD didn't send me all my power pacs, so now we wait again.

For those of you who don't wear shoulder pads and wear "minimal equipment, the ref bag might fit all your stuff and it doesn't have wheels.

I was originally under the impression that ozone treatment would get rid of existing odours - the holy grail for all sorts of smelly stuff such as boots and anything else with organic-based funk.

However, as I've now got a nice, big, balcony for airing out my stuff, have been purchasing new equipment (90% of my old stuff was second hand, old, and smelly), and am diligent about doing things right, (airing out equipment right away no matter how late I get home from a game, ensuring my hands are clean and they get a shot of anti-bacterial hand gel before putting on my gloves, etc...) I should be able to prevent the odours in the first place.

I should add my experience so far with the bag/blower. I've had it about a month now and find the bag to be very large, especially in smaller locker rooms. However, all equipment fits in just fine following the provided diagram. The bag has lots of compartments and some pockets - it appears durable. Equipment is very easy to locate and put back - very roomy.

However, it doesn't easily fit in a car or wagon trunk easily - it fits, but is pretty wide - just room for the bag and blower. They have a smaller bag coming out in about a month by 8". The blower instruction booklet has a picture of the "medium" bag with dimensions. Even without the blower, I think the bag is excellent.

Shock Doctor replaced by blower the first day it was available (my original was only a display and died on me). They also sent me a new bag, as my original was a display as well (minor differences). The replacement bag had a small defect in that the inside plastic wheel covers were on the wrong end - not a big deal as it's still functional, but again Shock Doctor sent me a new bag. They said they didn't want either bag back! I appreciated the comment from them "It's not about the money, it's about doing the right thing and correcting the problem." So, I have two bags in my basement........just waiting for a new home......

How does it work? I find that the equipment nearest the blower dries fine (within the 2 hour timer, but the other stuff doesn't dry as quick - and needs to be run a second time. Since the drive to the rink is sometimes 40 minutes, I run it in the car.

I have to add that I have talked and emailed quite often with the VP of Product Development at Shock Doctor. Their service has been wonderful - they are dedicated to getting this product out there, supporting it, and recognize that it's a new concept.

Sorry to dig up an old thread.

I was thinking about picking up one of these bags (likely the smaller junior or 32" model) from Hockey Giant since they are cheap enough to take a flyer on (I hated the last wheel bag I owned but have never seen an SD bag). Hockey Giant told me the bags they have on sale now are "considered 2007"; her use of the term "considered" set off red flags for me, esp. since elsewhere I have read that the bags HG has on sale have been so since 2006. I emailed Shock Doctor and they told me the 2007 and 2008 model year bags had heavy duty wheel housings and reinforced corners, which is reason enough for one to want the 2007 (or later) bag.

Giant's price also seems a lot lower than the price available online elsewhere (e.g. icewarehouse.com), so it gives me pause. Anyone know if the bags HG has are indeed 2007 bags ? Were the 32" bags even out in 2006, or do they all correct the apparent design flaws in the original run ?

JR bags did not come out in 06...they were backordered. The ones I got are the newer ones.

Thank you JR. Reconsidering purchasing the bag as I have read more than a few comments that a single run of the timer is not enough to dry out a full bag. I was hoping to be able to dry my stuff out entirely in the bag, but if I have to remember to go back and reset the timer a few hours after coming home, I just know that is not going to work. I will forget to do so, and days later take my bag and find it full of stinky, half damp equipment, which sort of defeats the whole purpose.

Well I got a bag and blower for xmas this year and so far I am not impressed.

After my game on sunday night i pulled out my socks, wicking shirt , etc and left just my pads, skates and helmet in the bag. Made sure it was lined up like the diagram, turned on the blower with heat and ozone for 3 hours. The next morning before work i checked it ALL the gear was still pretty damp. I set it for 3 hours again with heat and ozone, when i got home from work same thing damp gear!

I have read mixed reviews, people with similar stories as mine other people who say it dries their gear in one sitting. I gave it the benefit of the doubt. Now i am starting to regret asking for this and all the work my mom went to finding one to get it.

Did i get a bad blower or something here? I was really hoping this would be a great solution for drying and holding off the stink in our apartment for my girlfriend.

How many others have had this problem?

How many does this bag/blower actually work for? (i.e. really drying the gear)

thanks.

I have found that putting my stuff in as per the diagrams does not work that well. I usually end up having to take out some stuff, and then rearrange to optimize air flow. Even then, there is no way I trust that bag to dry my gear in one cycle. Every time I have done so, I open the bag to find some of my equipment moist and smelly, which NEVER happens when I take my stuff out and hang it. In my mind this totally defeats the purpose of the bag. I had hoped to be able to take my bag from the rink, plug it in, and trust that my gear was dry for the next day. No such luck.

I too am disappointed with the bag. I have gone back to my old bag and find myself just using the SD bag to spot-ozonate dry gear every now and then. I can see it being somewhat useful when I am staying in a hotel for tournaments, where drying space and time are real constraints, but otherwise my SD bag is mostly just taking up a lot of space in my basement.

And it DOES take up a lot of space. I bought the "medium"/junior bag because I was afraid the larger bag would not fit in one car trunk, and even still it looks WAY bigger than my Eagle Pro player bag, so much that people have commented on it being a huge bag. Unfortunately, because of the internal divider and a few other design issues, it doesn't fit stuff inside as well as my Eagle bag.

yeah it does take up space. i got the big 40 inch bag. the best i have fund is just to lay it flat and slide it under a bed or prop it against a wall.

i am starting to regret asking for this, which sucks because my mom was so happy to get it for me if it was something that would be helpful.

it seems like it would be more useful to hang my stuff first, then ozone it the next day. Like you said though, that really defeats the purpose of the whole thing.

i should have done more research on this thing. I also stupidly chucked the box for the dryer, so i probably couldn't even take the stupid thing back next time i am in Michigan.

A better and much cheaper alternative to this bag would be to make a gear rack and putting your gear on it. Can be made from a few 2 x 4's, some broken sticks, and a bracket or two.

I'll post pics of mine later, Sometimes I have games in the morning as well as afternoon and it works great to provide me with completely dry gear by the 2nd ice time.

i normally hang my gear to dry. and it always did in about a day, quicker if i used a fan. i was hoping the bag would help do it quick and i wanted the ozone to help delay or limit the smell since i am now living with my girlfriend.

doesn't seem like that idea is going to work.

I am far from a biologist, but the fundamental idea that I see wrong with the shockdoctor bag is that you've still got all of your gear crammed into a close quarters area which would make it more prone to mold growth and bad smell. If you really want your gear to be aired out I think you've really got to do it the old fashioned way.

just my 2 cents.

i might try and return the bag and get the hose hook up for the blower and use that just on my skates and gloves. Then hang up the rest of my gear like i used to.

I got this bag for xmas too and was a touch disapointed that everything did not dry in one set of the timer. My stuff got most of the way dry, probably 75% or so. But I just reset it for another 2 hours and it was bone dry. No big deal.

I had the gear tree and it worked fine, but it took 2 days for my stuff to hang dry. Plus, I live in a 2 bedroom apartment, so space was limited for a gear tree. And the space I did have, I didn't want my sweaty gear hanging around in.

So for me, having to turn the dial twice to ensure my gear was nice and dry within a few hours of the end of the game was no big deal. My only complaint is the size of this giant bag. I can't hardly get the thing in the trunk of my Accord

I bought the full size bag at the start of this season, after my girlfriend moved in with me and converted my hockey room into a walk-in closet. I take my shin pads out of the bag when I get home, turn the heater on and everything is dry in the morning. Overall, the bag has been a good solution for me. I can still keep my equipment inside, and I don't have a room that smells like hockey equipment.
