Just heard on the radio the girls got cut.

I wonder if they will condescend to play on the girl's team. If you were the coach of the girl's team, would you want two players who called your team a joke, even if they were your best players ?

I know that if I was the coach of the girls team and they showed up for tryouts after their very public comments I would probably cut them on attitude alone.

Usually the girls' field hockey is the alternative to boys' football.  And, yes, one of my big issues with this ruling is that it will end the discrimination that PROTECTS girls' sport.

Similar to society, there is a double standard that separates men and women in sports. I find it ridiculous that not allowing girls to play on a boys team despite having a girls team within the school is labelled as discrimination. I know for a fact that the Toronto District School Board has strict regulations pertaining to co-ed participation in sports. The rule clearly states that females are allowed to participate and play on a boy's team IF there is not a girls team offered in that sport. Is it not painfully clear that if the girls had the skill to make the team that the coach would have made the best decision for his team, and support their appeal to play with the boys? How can this be considered discrimination that the girls are not allowed to play if there is already a girls team? Further on, it has been expressed that if the ruling allows boys to play for girls teams,it would be detrimental to female sports. This situation is now labelled as PROTECTION for girls sports. How the same rule be labelled as discrimation when applying to girls, but then considered protection when boys make the same appeal? Proctection and discrimination? They seem to be distinctly opposite, and its hard to believe those words can be used to describe a single situation only separated by gender.

I dont mean to come off as absent minded or arrogant, but true equality could result in major setbacks in girls sports. I do not support giving boys the opportunity to play on girls teams because there is always house league and select for boys to play outside of school, where they can play no matter what their skill level. But girls that are above other girls, but not skilled enough to play with boys should not be allowed to use their gender to get their way.

EDIT: i had not read through the entire thread when i posted. i guess the situation has been resolved, sorry.

What annoys me is that they felt discriminated against when there is a girls hockey team at the school they could play on but in their words it was a joke.

I don't see the discrimination.

I completely agree with you JP(Metro).

12th grade.

They're not kids any more.

For a coach trying to put together a competitive team it would be too much of a distraction.

Why? Because they're good looking.

It would be hard trying to build team chemistry when the guys aren't just competing to win games.

Well put.

Oh metro, you are such a provocateur and I am (obviously) oh so weak to be rising to the bait!!

Let’s not have women in the workforce because men will find it too distracting to do their work.

The point that girls are too beautiful to be on a team with boyz because boyz won’t be able to control themselves is as fallacious as Mack’s comment a few months’ ago that all women who play hockey are dykes (or look like one).

As the Israelli and Canadian military have proven that mixed gender teams are successful in COMBAT situations. I think the boys could handle it in hockey…

Hockeymom, the thing is you are not a boy/men so you can't understand. It's as simple as that. Any real men here know what metro is meaning.

The only thing I could accept at worst is playing shinny with girl but I don't like it. And I will never be for competitive between boys and girls

I know there are some talented women hockey players out there, but player for player due to genetics overall men are ahead of women. One of if not the best womens team in the world the Canadian National Womens team, to practice for the world championships played midget AAA teams from around Alberta and finished with around a .500 record, and this was with the midgets having to play a different style than they are used to with no hitting.

the best womens team in the world cant domonate a midget AAA team, brutal. Imagine if it was contact. Im all for women being allowed to play on mens teams (even the NHL) as long as they are treated exactly equal, ie. getting cranked just as hard as a man. If they can keep up and compete with men, why shouldnt they be allowed to play, but the fact is that they simply cannot compete with the physical strength and speed of men, sorry girls.

As far as pure skill and speed are concerned, I would probably equate the women's national teams to a decent Jr. A (tier II) team. If there was to be physical contact in the game, I think a good Bantam team could give them a run for their money.

I've been on the ice with female Olympians: they can skate, they can handle the puck, and they can thread-the-needle. They can be fun to play with if it's a pick-up/open hockey setting, but I just can't get excited about the women's game itself.

Most women will agree with your point and want to play on their own teams. The majority of female hockey players don't like to play with men b/c of the difference in size and the different mentality that men bring to the game. Personally I only like to play hockey with guys that I know because I know they won't come after me to prove I "don't belong" on the ice with them. Most elite female players enjoy training with guys because it forces them to pick up their game so when they go back to their respective teams they are that much quicker with their reactions.

I think the girls out of Canada that got this whole thing rolling should have just sucked it up and played on their girls team. If the school has a team for girls, they should play on it, even if it sucks. If they were guys and the boys team at the school stunk they wouldn't have a choice in the matter, so why should they?

Wasn't there a guy who played field hockey for a high school team in, uh, Massachusetts, I want to say, a couple years ago? I think I remember Rick Reilly writing about it in SI.

After seeing what a friend of mine had to do for his daughter to play women's hockey at a high level, I can't say enough about her (or her parents) level of dedication. In the end, their efforts make women's hockey better by having the best women play each other and not in ones and twos in men's hockey.
