hockeyshmockey10 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2006 so while working today, a kid i knew came in and set down his two month old vector 10.0's. he then sat in the bauer chairs we have and pulled up his pant legs. he showed me how his skates have been giving him rashes and sores where his tongue hits his shin. it's pretty much the exact shape, i refit him just to be 100% sure it's not the sizing and the fit is good.he purchased the skates two months ago and has been on them a lot. he thought the sores were due to break in, but by this time he was getting worried. he uses long socks, dries out his skates and takes very good care of them. then, he even told me that his shin guard goes over the tongue of the vectors. "i have wrapped my legs in bandages, and used socks and it honestly prevents me from playing."he can't go through high school try outs because they hurt just to put on. "it feels like insulation is inside the skate, like glass is cutting me with every stride."so with all of those out of the question, i was almost lost in what to tell the kid. he might be having a allergic reaction to the tongues or something...but he has used ccm's before and this has never happened. in the 16 years of playing, he never had this problem before. and in my 17 years of playing hockey and then 4 working in this shop...i have never seen someone have this problem. the pictures are still at work, but i wanted to maybe get some feedback from you guys.it can't be lace bite, because this starts well above the 2nd eyelet...any help? Ivan 1 Report post Posted September 28, 2006 Crabs in Vector skates? Hmm.. Mine don't have them. Send him to a dermatologist to take a look at his legs. It may be not skate related at all.

chk hrd 164 Report post Posted September 28, 2006 definitely have him see a dermatologist. Is it one leg or both?.It could be a nasty skin infection that he picked up from the locker room. It could be something a stupid as walking around the locker room barefoot and then scratching his foot/shin using his feet. The bacteria could be in his skates. My son picked up a wicked case of infentigo (sp) from (what we guess) was a dirty locker room or hotel room. That causes rashes that crust up and ooze.I would completely sanitize the skates. Either soak them in water with a little bleach or even better use a sani sport.

I had this issue and it is a form of a allergic reaction to the foam in the skates seeping through the liner. They use formaldihied (embombing fluid) in the foam and some people get this reaction to it. Most people wouldnt know because your usually dead when it gets put in you......The issue I had I ended up using Petards Glove Palm material and sent it to Bauer to have them use it as the liner. And on the iside of that was some plastic to keep it from coming through. It worked like a charm.
Patrick67 1 Report post Posted September 28, 2006 I had a major problem with the Vector 10.0's. After 1 month of use, it felt like glass was cutting into my ankles everytime I leaned forward.Wearing shoes, I could run, jump etc. with no pain. As soon as i put on my skates it was there instantly if I tried to lean forward.Played with the Vector Pro's last year. and had no problems what so ever. One of my teammates suggested that the tounge was too hard, thus rubbing into my ankle while flexing forward. Tried breaking down the tounge overnight, by leaving it rolled up under pressure. Didn't have an effect, so I decided to skip the top-eyelet... problem solved.I know you say it's not lace-bite, but try to have him skate with the top eyelet untied. After 2 skates (and the rest inbetween) the feeling of scattered glass inside my boot disappeared.Sounds like his problem is alittle different, but still worth a shot IMO. hockeyshmockey10 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 thank you very much for contributing NOTHING to this thread. in my opinion...this is a very serious issue, but you probably don't have any trouble with your skates.yes, he was totally fine with me putting pictures of his problem online so he could get PROFESSIONAL help

Chadd 916 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 Never seen that before. I wonder if tucking the shin pad inside the tongue would help. That is not a solution, more of a workaround. Seeing a doctor ASAP is the way to go. Pantherfan, Knock it off.

Chadd 916 Report post Posted September 30, 2006 Does the kid wear socks in his skates? Cause maybe just the sock between the skate material and his leg will stop the rash. Skates are not ment to be worn barefoot. I've never seen such a bad reaction :s Hope he fines a solution quick. He needs to go to the dermatologist. From the initial post:he purchased the skates two months ago and has been on them a lot. he thought the sores were due to break in, but by this time he was getting worried. he uses long socks, dries out his skates and takes very good care of them. then, he even told me that his shin guard goes over the tongue of the vectors. dix0r 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2006 this may or not be of help:around a year ago, i got cut by a skate during a game. i went down after getting kicked basically, and i slid ankle-first into the goal-post. i thought i'd just been bruised a bit, but when i took my socks off, i realized i'd been cut and probably needed some stitches. a few staples later, i was told to keep neosporin on it all the time for at least a couple weeks. after a couple weeks, i started getting a weird rash. painful, burning, cracked skin, itchy...really unpleasant. i was still skating during this time btw. i went to the doctor who said i had eczema, and he gave me a steroid cream to get rid of it. then i looked it up online and realized it never goes away for good, it just goes and comes whenever. thanks for failing to explain that to me doc :[so, after i started using the steroid cream and stopped using neosporin, it got better, but every time i skated, i would get the rash. it would go from painful to itchy in about a week, and then i'd skate again and it would get worse again. finally i realized that some of the neosporin had to have gotten on the skates, and minute amounts were enough to cause it to come back. eventually i got rid of the skates and it hasn't bothered me since. so, apparantly eczema./contact dermatitis can be caused by a huge variety of things...ie you could go years wearing polyester clothing (OK weird example there) and then all of a sudden you get a rash and can't ever wear it again. so perhaps it's eczema and you're basically reacting to the material from the skates? or is there anything else that could be in the skates, like neomycin (active ingredient in neosporin - a really common one apparantly). btw, i was kind of proud, i guess they mistakenly thought i was tough cause i played hockey...rather than have me come back to get the staples out, they gave me a medical staple remover and told me to do it myself in a few weeks :]
